Colts G Quenton Nelson to have foot surgery, miss 5-12 weeks

Three-time All-Pro left guard Quenton Nelson will have surgery to repair a bone issue in his right foot Tuesday after being injured during Indianapolis Colts practice on Monday.

The Colts said Nelson left practice after his foot was stepped on. He was spotted watching Tuesday’s practice in a protective boot.

Coach Frank Reich said Nelson will have the same procedure quarterback Carson Wentz underwent on Monday, though he pointed out that, unlike the injury to Wentz, Nelson’s was not related to a previous injury.

“They got there different ways, but essentially the same place,” Reich said.

Both players are expected to miss between five and 12 weeks.

The Colts picked up the fifth-year-option of Nelson in April.

Nelson, 25, is due to receive $13.754 million in 2022 in the final season of his rookie deal.

Nelson was selected sixth overall in the 2018 NFL Draft and has been a star for the Colts. He has been named a first-team All-Pro and a Pro Bowl selection in each of his three seasons. Nelson was an All-American at Notre Dame in 2017 prior to joining the Colts.

He has started all 48 regular-season games and three postseason games during his career. He has allowed just three career sacks on 1,946 pass-blocking snaps, according to Pro Football Focus, including one in 2020.
