Ex-Georgia LB Adam Anderson indicted on rape charge

A grand jury indicted former Georgia linebacker Adam Anderson on Tuesday and charged him with rape.

Anderson will be arraigned June 13. His lawyer said in a statement given to ESPN that he plans to plead not guilty.

The senior from Rome, Ga., was arrested on Nov. 10 and released on bond a week later after being accused of raping a 21-year-old woman in a house in Athens, Ga., on Oct. 29.

According to the police report, a 21-year-old woman went to a house in the early morning hours of Oct. 29, had some drinks and later awoke to find Anderson raping her. She reported the alleged incident to police later that day, the same day Anderson and the Bulldogs left Athens to head to Jacksonville, Fla., where they played Florida on Oct. 30.

Anderson played against the Gators, but the team suspended him the following week once the allegations came to light.

ESPN reported that a second woman also accused Anderson of sexual assault in October 2020, but he hasn’t been charged in that case.

Prior to the allegation, Anderson was viewed as a potential first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by ESPN and CBS Sports.

Georgia LB Adam Anderson formally charged with rape

Georgia linebacker Adam Anderson was charged with rape on Wednesday evening after voluntarily turning himself in to the Athens-Clarke County (Ga.) Police, his attorney announced.

Anderson was being held without bond.

Lawyer Steve Sadow said in a statement, “Adam is innocent of the charge brought against him and intends to vigorously defend himself in court. He will seek release on bond. Once again, Adam hopes and prays that the UGA community and the public keep an open mind and afford him the presumption of innocence that the law demands.”

According to the police report, a 21-year-old woman went to a house in the early morning hours of Oct. 29, had some drinks and later awoke to find Anderson raping her. She reported the alleged incident to police later that day, the same day Anderson and the Bulldogs left Athens to head to Jacksonville, Fla., where they opposed Florida on Oct. 30.

Anderson played against the Gators, a game top-ranked Georgia won 34-7. He was suspended from the team last week, with Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart saying the school would “cooperate fully with all law enforcement and campus protocols.”

Anderson, a senior, leads the team with five sacks this season and has 32 tackles.

Prior to the allegation, Anderson was viewed as a potential first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by ESPN and CBS Sports.

Georgia starting LB Adam Anderson faces rape allegation

Police in Athens, Ga., are investigating Georgia senior linebacker Adam Anderson on an allegation of rape.

ESPN reported that the football program suspended Anderson indefinitely.

As of Thursday night, Anderson has not been arrested, and he has denied the allegation through his attorney.

A police report was filed last Friday afternoon outlining the allegation. A woman told police that she went to a house in Athens after having some drinks and awoke to nonconsensual penetration.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart released a statement Thursday confirming the university was aware of Anderson’s situation.

“We don’t comment on law enforcement matters, but I’ve been clear about the high standards we have for our student-athletes on and off the field,” Kirby said. “I will be working closely with our administration to ensure we cooperate fully with all law enforcement and campus protocols.”

Anderson played in No. 1 Georgia’s 34-7 win over Florida the day after the police report was filed.

Anderson has 32 tackles and leads the Bulldogs in sacks with five.
