Cardinals release Colt McCoy, Kyler Murray reportedly headed to PUP list

Colt McCoy was released on Monday and the Arizona Cardinals’ franchise quarterback, Kyler Murray, will reportedly begin the season on the physically unable to perform list.

The roster moves would set up another big decision for first-year head coach Jonathan Gannon: whether to ride with rookie Clayton Tune or journeyman Josh Dobbs as QB1 in Arizona.

The Cardinals traded a fifth-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for Dobbs and a seventh-round pick last week. Arizona needs help at the position until Murray clears rehab from ACL surgery on his right knee.

The former No. 1 overall pick tore the ACL on Dec. 12 last season. By being placed on the PUP list, Murray would be required by NFL rule to miss at least the first four games of the 2023 season.

Tune, a fifth-round pick out of Houston, has impressed Gannon in extended playing time in the preseason.

“I feel like I have learned a lot, grown a lot,” he said. “I just continue to learn each day that goes by.”

Dobbs, a fourth-round pick of the Steelers in 2017, made the only two starts of his career late last season with the Tennessee Titans.

McCoy spent the past three seasons with the Cardinals and entered the NFL as a third-round pick of the Browns in 2010 after starring at Texas. He had stints with San Francisco, Washington and the New York Giants.

McCoy was released Monday along with safety Sean Chandler and cornerback Nate Hairston as part of Arizona’s roster reduction to reach the 53-man limit allowed for the regular season.

Cardinals QB Trace McSorley to start vs. Buccaneers

Trace McSorley will make his first career NFL start on Sunday after fellow quarterback Colt McCoy was ruled out for the Arizona Cardinals’ game against the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury announced the news involving his quarterbacks on Wednesday.

McCoy, 36, sustained a concussion early in the third quarter of Arizona’s 24-15 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday. He was starting in place of the injured Kyler Murray, who tore his ACL in the Cardinals’ 27-13 loss to the New England Patriots on Dec. 12.

McSorley, 27, replaced McCoy and completed 7 of 15 pass attempts for 95 yards with two interceptions.

McSorley has completed 18 of 39 passes for 256 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions in seven career games with the Baltimore Ravens and Cardinals. He was selected by the Ravens in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft from Penn State.

MRI confirms torn ACL for Cards’ Kyler Murray

An MRI confirmed Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray sustained a season-ending ACL injury in Monday’s game against the New England Patriots, according to multiple reports Tuesday.

The team Twitter account posted: “Heal soon QB1.”

Murray was injured on the third play from scrimmage, a play in which he dropped back to pass and then scrambled for a gain of 3 yards. He fell awkwardly on the non-contact play and was quickly attended to by team trainers.

Colt McCoy, 36, replaced Murray for the Cardinals (4-9), who dropped a 27-13 decision to the Patriots in Glendale, Ariz.

Murray, 25, has completed 66.4 percent of his passes for 2,368 yards with 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 11 games this season. He also has rushed 67 times for 418 yards and three scores.

A two-time Pro Bowl selection, Murray signed a $230.5-million contract during the offseason that could keep him with the franchise until 2028.

Murray has thrown for 13,848 yards with 84 touchdowns and 41 interceptions in 57 career games since the Cardinals selected him with the top overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Report: Backup QB Colt McCoy to start Monday for Cardinals

Colt McCoy will start at quarterback on Monday night when the Arizona Cardinals meet the San Francisco 49ers in Mexico City, NFL Network reported.

Starter Kyler Murray took limited reps in practice this week because of a hamstring injury. McCoy also was limited by a knee injury on Thursday but had no designation on the final injury report.

Murray was designated as questionable and apparently will miss his second straight game.

Last week, McCoy led the Cardinals to a 27-17 win over the Los Angeles Rams. The 36-year-old, in his 12th season, completed 26 of 37 pass attempts for 238 yards and a touchdown.

Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who was listed as questionable on the injury report, will play, multiple outlets reported Monday.

Hopkins missed the first six games of the season, suspended for testing positive for a banned substance. In four games, he has 36 catches for 396 yards and two touchdowns.

Kyler Murray remains day-to-day; Zach Ertz done for season

Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury said Monday that starting quarterback Kyler Murray remains day-to-day with the hamstring injury that parked him in Week 10.

Murray missed Sunday’s win over the Los Angeles Rams after testing out his hamstring in pregame warmups.

Colt McCoy earned the start, but he, too, left the game with a leg injury. Trace McSorley came on to close out the 27-17 win for the Cardinals.

The updates come the same day the team reportedly released backup running back Eno Benjamin and amid a report that starting tight end Zach Ertz (leg) is out for the rest of the season.

Kingsbury said the team wants Murray to be able to go full bore on the field before bringing him back. However, McCoy’s leg was “a little better” Monday, making him a question mark heading into this week’s prime time contest against division rival San Francisco this week.

McCoy threw for 238 yards and a touchdown against the Rams without a turnover.

Murray, 25, has completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 2,168 yards, with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions this season. He’s also rushed for 359 yards and two scores.

Benjamin, 23, started three games earlier this season when James Conner was injured. However, he played just one offensive snap against the Rams.

“it was time to give him (James Conner) the starting running back reps,” Kingsbury said Monday.

Benjamin rushed for 299 yards and two TDs in 10 games this season. Benjamin was a seventh-round draft pick by the Cards in the 2020 draft.

Kingsbury didn’t provide an update on tight end Zach Ertz, who was carted off Sunday after sustaining the leg injury. However, NFL Network reported Ertz is done for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Ertz finishes with 47 catches for 406 yards and four TDs in 10 games.

The Cardinals (4-6) host the 49ers (5-4) on “Monday Night Football” in Week 11.

Cardinals QB Kyler Murray game-time decision vs. Rams

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray will be a game-time decision for this weekend’s clash against the host Los Angeles Rams, coach Kliff Kingsbury announced Friday.

Murray, who is nursing a hamstring injury, was listed as a non-participant in Wednesday’s walk-through and limited in Thursday’s practice.

Journeyman Colt McCoy or Trace McSorley would be in line to start if Murray is unable to play for the Cardinals (3-6).

Murray, 25, has completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 2,168 yards, with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions this season. He’s also rushed for 359 yards and two scores.

Cardinals put Colt McCoy on IR, promote Trace McSorley

The Arizona Cardinals put backup quarterback Colt McCoy on injured reserve Wednesday and promoted Trace McSorley to No. 2.

McCoy, 36, will have to miss at least the first four games of the season. McSorley, 27, will open as Kyler Murray’s primary backup.

McCoy has been battling an arm issue through much of training camp.

Neither McCoy nor Murray appeared in a preseason game, with McSorley taking a majority of the snaps under center.

McSorley was promoted from the practice squad to replace McCoy on the 53-man roster. The Cardinals re-signed rookie QB Jarrett Guarantano to replace McSorley on the practice squad.

McCoy went 2-1 last season in place of Murray, who missed time with an ankle injury. Overall, McCoy is 10-23 as a starter with five different teams. He has thrown for 7,195 career yards and 33 touchdowns in 52 games (33 starts).

McSorley has appeared in three games – all with Baltimore – and has thrown just 10 passes while completing three, one for a TD. He was a sixth-round pick of the Ravens in the 2019 draft.

The Cardinals also signed cornerback Corey Ballentine to the practice squad. To make room on the 16-man squad, the team released wide receiver Jontre Kirklin.

The Cardinals open the season Sunday at home vs. the Kansas City Chiefs.

Reports: Colt McCoy to start for Cardinals at Seattle

Kyler Murray is not expected to play Sunday with the Arizona Cardinals prepared to start quarterback Colt McCoy for a third consecutive game, according to reports.

McCoy was injured last week but his pectoral strain didn’t keep him out of practice as Arizona (8-2) prepared for its trip to Seattle (3-6).

Murray has not played this month and was limited in practice by an ankle injury. Sitting him for a third consecutive game, coupled with a bye in Week 12, would give the Cardinals a full month to rest their MVP candidate.

It marks the third straight week in which Arizona coach Kliff Kingsbury has viewed the star quarterback as a game-day decision. Murray was injured during a loss to the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 28.

“He definitely progressed,” Kingsbury said. “So we want to make sure that he’s in a place where he can play his game, protect himself and do all the things, and if he can, he’ll be out there.”

Murray has struggled to rediscover “the acceleration stuff that really makes him who he is at times,” according to Kingsbury.

“He’s got to be able to use that to get away, escape trouble, the things that he does naturally and instinctively,” Kingsbury said. “So we’re still trying to get to that point.”

Murray was a leading MVP candidate before the injury. He has completed an NFL-best 72.7 percent of his passes for 2,276 yards, 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions and also has rushed for three scores.

“We’d love to have Kyler,” rookie wideout Rondale Moore said. “We love Colt. Whoever is back there, I think the plan stays the same.”

The Cardinals are 1-1 with McCoy as the starter. He has completed 33 of 46 passes for 356 yards with one TD and one interception.

Cardinals sign QB Colt McCoy to 1-year deal

The Arizona Cardinals announced Tuesday night they have signed veteran quarterback Colt McCoy to a one-year deal.

McCoy, 34, spent last season with the New York Giants. He appeared in four games, including two starts, and completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 375 yards, one touchdown and one interception while posting a passer rating of 75.0.

In 44 career games (30 starts), McCoy has passed for 6,455 yards, 30 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. He has played for the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, the Washington Football Team and New York.

Cleveland drafted McCoy in the third round (No. 85 overall) out of Texas in 2010.

Reports: Giants QB Jones to start vs. Ravens

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is expected to start the team’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, multiple media outlets reported on Saturday.

Jones, who is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game in Baltimore, sat out the Giants’ 20-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns last week with ankle and hamstring injuries.

The Giants’ offense is in need of a jolt. The team has been outscored 46-13 in the past two weeks — both losses.

Jones, 23, has thrown for 2,462 yards with eight touchdowns and nine interceptions in 12 games this season. He also has rushed for 403 yards and a score.

Colt McCoy, 34, completed 19 of 31 passes for 221 yards last week for the Giants (5-9), who are tied for second place with Dallas in the NFC East. Both clubs trail the Washington Football Team (6-8) in the division.

Washington is scheduled to host the Carolina Panthers (4-10) on Sunday.
