Green Bay Packers cornerback Davon House (31) commits pass interference in the end zone while covering Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Martavis Bryant (10) during the third quarter of their game, November 26, 2017 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Green Bay Packers 31-28 on a field goal as time expired.

Report: WR Martavis Bryant to work out for Cowboys

Recently reinstated wide receiver Martavis Bryant will work out for the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday, The Athletic reported.

Bryant has not played in the NFL since 2018 with the then-Oakland Raiders. He was suspended indefinitely that December for violating the terms of his conditional reinstatement from a prior ban.

NFL Network reported on Saturday that commissioner Roger Goodell had reinstated Bryant, who turns 32 next month.

Hoping for an NFL comeback, Bryant played for the XFL’s Vegas Vipers in 2023 and caught 14 passes for 154 yards and no touchdowns in eight games.

Bryant caught 145 passes for 2,183 yards and 17 touchdowns in 44 games (18 starts) with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2014-15, 2017) and Raiders (2018). He was a fourth-round pick by Pittsburgh in 2014.

Bryant was suspended four games in 2015 for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. He was suspended for the entire 2016 campaign after reportedly missing multiple drug tests.

Cowboys LT Tyron Smith (neck) iffy for Eagles

Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith did not practice Wednesday due to a neck injury.

Smith worked with the rehab group instead but has a chance to join the padded practice on Thursday, head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters.

Backup offensive lineman Chuma Edoga practiced in limited fashion. Both players participated in a walkthrough on Wednesday as the Cowboys (5-2) prepare to visit the Philadelphia Eagles (7-1) on Sunday.

Smith, 32, did not play in Weeks 3-4 or last Sunday’s 43-20 win against the Los Angeles Rams.

The eight-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time All-Pro has started 152 games with the Cowboys since 2011.

Edoga, 26, has played in all seven games (five starts) in his first season with the Cowboys. He left Sunday’s win on a cart after sustaining an injury to his right leg in the fourth quarter.

He has appeared in 33 games (18 starts) with the New York Jets (2019-21), Atlanta Falcons (2022) and Dallas.

Cowboys OT Tyron Smith (neck) inactive vs. Rams

Dallas Cowboys All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith is inactive for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams because of a neck injury sustained during the week.

He was listed as questionable for the game against the Rams (3-4) after limited participation in practice. He was added to the injury report on Thursday.

Smith, 32, has started four games this season. He missed games in Weeks 3-4 against the Arizona Cardinals and New England Patriots, respectively, because of a knee injury. Dallas (4-2) had a bye last week.

Smith was a first-team All-Pro in 2014 and 2016, and has been selected for eight Pro Bowl games.

The Cowboys also listed the following players as inactive: quarterback Trey Lance, running back Deuce Vaughn, wide receiver Jalen Brooks, defensive lineman Villiami Fehoko and cornerbacks Noah Igbinoghene and Eric Scott.

The Rams’ inactives are running back Zach Evans, linebacker Nick Hampton, defensive end Earnest Brown and offensive lineman Zach Thomas and starting right tackle Rob Havenstein (calf injury).

Cowboys try to get back on track against former OC Kellen Moore, Chargers

The Dallas Cowboys are coming off a dreadful performance and former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore would like to deliver some payback.

Moore now runs the Los Angeles Chargers’ offense after having the keys to the Dallas attack the previous four seasons. He’ll look to keep the scoreboard busy when the Chargers (2-2) host the Cowboys (3-2) on the Monday Night Football stage at Inglewood, Calif.

Moore was pushed out the door by Dallas coach Mike McCarthy after last season. There was a falloff in 2022 after Moore’s offense produced NFL-best figures of 31.2 points and 407 yards per game in 2021.

The revenge matchup comes after Dallas was walloped 42-10 by the host San Francisco 49ers last Sunday night. The Cowboys allowed a total of 41 points over their first four games before they had no answers against the 49ers.

“I’m pretty sure (Moore) wants to go out there and put it on us, but you’ve got to put on some perspective for what we just went through on Sunday and how we’re champing at the bit to get out there and get out next game, on the road, so we can kind of just get this taste out of our mouths,” Dallas safety Jayron Kearse said.

“We just went out there (against the 49ers) and had an all-time stinker for what this defense is about, and we’re ready to go out there and play against somebody as well. So I’m pretty sure he’s ready for it and we’re ready for it as well.”

There certainly won’t be any secrets after Kearse, star linebacker Micah Parsons and other Dallas defenders regularly practiced against Moore’s offense.

“It’s not uncommon in the league to have matchups where both sides know each other a little bit,” Chargers coach Brandon Staley said.

McCarthy now calls the offensive plays for Dallas, and the club had a problematic night against San Francisco. Quarterback Dak Prescott threw three interceptions as the Cowboys totaled just 197 yards on offense and eight first downs.

“Continuity and consistency is obviously what we’re focused on,” McCarthy said Wednesday. “No. 1, you have to score points in this league.”

Dallas ranks eighth in scoring (26.8 points per game), just behind the Chargers (27.5). Los Angeles is fifth in total offense (388.8 yards per game) and the Cowboys are 17th (327.4).

The Chargers, who had a bye in Week 5, will get a boost Monday when standout running back Austin Ekeler returns after a three-game absence due to a sprained right ankle. Ekeler was hurt in Week 1 when he racked up 164 scrimmage yards (117 rushing, 47 receiving) in a 36-34 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

“I feel really good,” said Ekeler, who was a full practice participant on Thursday. “I felt like I probably could’ve played during the bye week if I had a game then.”

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert practiced Thursday and will play with a fractured left middle finger, an injury that occurred in a 24-17 home victory over the Oakland Raiders on Oct. 1. He has passed for 1,106 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception.

Los Angeles also will have star safety Derwin James Jr. (hamstring) after he was sidelined against the Raiders. He practiced in full on Thursday.

Pass rusher Joey Bosa (hamstring/toe) sat out practice Thursday. He missed the game against the Raiders. Safety Alohi Gilman (heel) also sat out practice, while tight end Donald Parham Jr. (wrist) and cornerback Deane Leonard (hamstring) were limited.

Dallas outside linebacker Leighton Vander Esch (neck) will be placed on injured reserve sometime before Monday’s game, McCarthy said. In addition, special teams ace C.J. Goodwin (pectoral) told reporters that he will be sidelined for four to six weeks. Both players were hurt against San Francisco.

Also missing Thursday’s practice were receiver/returner KaVontae Turpin (ankle) and safety Juanyeh Thomas (hamstring). Standout running back Tony Pollard (shoulder) was limited.

Report: Cowboys’ KaVontae Turpin has high-ankle sprain

Dallas Cowboys receiver and return specialist KaVontae Turpin sustained a high-ankle sprain in Sunday’s lopsided loss to San Francisco, NFL Network reported Monday.

Turpin, 27, scored the Cowboys’ only touchdown with a 26-yard reception in the second quarter of a 42-10 setback against the 49ers.

He will have an MRI to determine the severity of the sprain but a typical absence for such an injury is 4-6 weeks, per the report.

Turpin has caught five passes for 51 yards and a touchdown and has rushed six times for 66 yards and a score in five games this season. He has also returned five punts for 30 yards and two kickoffs for 33 yards.

Cowboys assistant Sharrif Floyd released from hospital

Dallas Cowboys assistant coach Sharrif Floyd has been released from the hospital after fainting on the sideline during Sunday’s game.

Floyd, 32, is in his first season as an assistant defensive line coach and defensive quality control coach.

Floyd collapsed on the sideline during the third quarter of the Cowboys’ 30-10 win against the New York Jets in Arlington, Texas. He was able to leave the field under his own power and went to the training room for further evaluation.

The plan is for Floyd to work from home Monday and return to team facilities on Tuesday, according to the Dallas Morning News.

“Right now everything is checking out well,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones told 105.3 The Fan on Monday.

Floyd was a first-round draft pick (23rd overall) by Minnesota in 2013. The defensive tackle recorded 95 tackles and 9.5 sacks in 44 games (24 starts) with the Vikings from 2013-16.

Cowboys, Giants begin battle to contend in NFC East, beyond

Expectations, understandably, are rising this season for both the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants ahead of their opener under the “Sunday Night Football” lights in East Rutherford, N.J.

Dallas has one of its most talented collections of players in recent memory and wants to avoid underperforming in the playoffs, in owner Jerry Jones’ eyes. New York arrived on the playoff scene ahead of schedule last year and is bringing back the same core with some improvements on both sides of the ball.

Both teams must contend with the Philadelphia Eagles, who beat them out for the NFC East title on their way to a Super Bowl appearance a year ago. On Sunday, they just have to contend with one another.

“All the divisional games are certainly big, and a matchup with a lot of tradition and history,” Giants quarterback Daniel Jones said. “Yeah, it’s a big deal, but it’s about what we do, it’s about how we play and taking care of our business first.”

New York started last season 7-2, stumbled down the stretch, eventually made the playoffs and beat the Minnesota Vikings in the wild-card round before losing to Philadelphia.

The Giants decided Daniel Jones had proven himself as their franchise quarterback and locked him in for $40 million per year over four years. Then they settled a rift with star running back Saquon Barkley by giving him a one-year pact worth up to $11 million, following Barkley’s best season since his rookie campaign.

The Giants added inside linebacker Bobby Okereke and traded for Arizona linebacker/safety Isaiah Simmons, who’s yet to live up to his potential as a former eighth overall draft pick. Rookie wide receiver Jalin Hyatt and veteran tight end Darren Waller will give Jones more to work with in the passing game.

“Like I’ve said before, growing up in a house with my parents, NFC East fans, I know the history,” Waller said this week. “I know how heated and competitive these games have been over the years and I know what I’m about to step into on Sunday. I am honored to take the field.”

Fans of those other NFC East teams relish the fact that it’s been 27 years and counting since the Cowboys won a Super Bowl — or even reached an NFC Championship Game. Last season, Dallas never lost consecutive games but fell to San Francisco in the divisional round.

“It means so much to have the whole thing come together in the playoffs when you got a team like that and raise its level of competitiveness, raise its level of execution, raise its level of intensity and play playoff football,” Jerry Jones, now 80, said in a radio appearance on 105.3 The Fan. “That’s what I want.”

Despite a surprise trade for Trey Lance of the San Francisco 49ers late last month, the Cowboys are again rolling with Dak Prescott as the starting quarterback. He was criticized for throwing 15 interceptions a year ago, but the Cowboys are confident he will “own” a revamped offense with head coach Mike McCarthy taking over play-calling.

Tony Pollard is RB1, with Ezekiel Elliott going to New England. The Cowboys locked up guard Zack Martin and cornerback Trevon Diggs, among the best at their respective positions, and they’re buoyed by a defensive front seven led by linebacker Micah Parsons and defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence.

“No one’s done anything. It’s the first game, so there really are no comparables,” McCarthy said. “There’s reputation based on what you did last year. Doesn’t mean much. … Execution is obviously the key.”

The Cowboys have won 11 of the past 12 meetings with the Giants, including another prime-time visit to New Jersey last September, a 23-16 Monday night victory.

Dallas offensive lineman Tyler Smith (hamstring), safety Donovan Wilson (calf) and defensive end Sam Williams (foot) missed Wednesday’s practice. Seven backups were limited for the Giants, including WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee).

Cowboys DE Sam Williams faces drug, weapon charges

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams is facing drug and weapons charges after a weekend arrest.

Police arrested him on Sunday in Frisco, Texas, where the Cowboys have their team headquarters.

Williams, 24, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and unlawful carrying of a weapon, according to Frisco police.

The team told ESPN it is aware of the situation but declined to comment. Williams practiced on Tuesday.

Williams was a second-round pick by Dallas in the 2022 NFL Draft. He played in 15 games as a rookie, logging 22 tackles, four sacks and three fumble recoveries.

Last December, Williams was cited for reckless driving after totaling his car near the team’s practice facility.

Reports: Cowboys G Zack Martin reaches deal, ends holdout

All-Pro guard Zack Martin ended his holdout Monday after reaching a new deal with the Dallas Cowboys, according to multiple reports.

The reworked contract will pay him more than $18 million in each of the next two years, fully guaranteed, per the reports.

That’s an extra $8.5 million for Martin, who had been slated to earn $13.5 million in 2023 and $14 million in 2024.

Martin, 32, has been a holdout for training camp in Oxnard, Calif., while seeking additional compensation.

The six-time All-Pro and eight-time Pro Bowl selection is going into his 10th season with the Cowboys, who drafted him in the first round (16th overall) in 2014.

Martin has started 137 regular season games and eight postseason games for Dallas.

Report: MRI for Cowboys’ first-round DT Mazi Smith (knee)

Dallas Cowboys first-round pick Mazi Smith will have a precautionary MRI on his knee, NFL Network reported.

The defensive tackle did not practice Tuesday in Oxnard, Calif., and has been battling tendinitis in training camp.

The 6-foot-3, 337-pound Smith was the 26th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Michigan.

Smith, 22, recorded 88 tackles (six for losses) and one fumble recovery in 30 games with the Wolverines.

Smith was listed as a backup to starter Johnathan Hankins on the Cowboys’ first depth chart released Monday.

Dallas opens the preseason at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday.
