Jets sign veteran K Greg Zuerlein

The New York Jets announced the signing of veteran kicker Greg Zuerlein on Saturday. Terms were not disclosed.

He spent the past two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys after eight years with the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams.

Zuerlein, 34, converted 29 of 35 field-goal attempts and 42 of 48 extra-point tries in 16 games with Dallas in 2021.

In 151 games, he has made 82.2 percent of his field goals (264 of 321) and 95.8 percent of his PATs (339 of 354).

A sixth-round pick by the Rams in 2012, Zuerlein earned All-Pro honors and made the Pro Bowl in 2017. He kicked a career-long 61-yard field goal in 2015.

Matt Ammendola and Eddy Pineiro made a combined 21 field goals for the Jets in 2021. Only the Seattle Seahawks (17) and Cleveland Browns (16) had fewer.

Zuerlein’s signing sets up a potential kicker battle this offseason as Pineiro, a restricted free agent, received a $2.43 million contract tender from the Jets earlier this month.

Cowboys K Greg Zuerlein lands on COVID list

The Dallas Cowboys placed kicker Greg Zuerlein on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday.

With no replacements on the roster or practice squad, Dallas will hold a kicker workout on Wednesday.

The Cowboys (6-2) host the Atlanta Falcons (4-4) this Sunday in Arlington, Texas.

Zuerlein, 33, has converted 14 of 18 field goals and 21 of 23 extra points through eight games this season.

He has made 81.9 percent of his field-goal attempts (249 of 304) during a 10-year career with the St. Louis and Los Angeles Rams (2012-19) and Cowboys.

Cowboys activate K Greg Zuerlein off PUP list

Dallas Cowboys kicker Greg Zuerlein passed his physical and was activated off the physically unable to perform list Wednesday.

The move comes one day after the Cowboys waived kicker Lirim Hajrullahu. Zuerlein is working his way back from offseason back surgery.

Zuerlein, 33, spent his first eight NFL seasons with the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams before signing a three-year contract with the Cowboys last season.

A Pro Bowl kicker in 2017, Zuerlein made 34 of 41 field-goal attempts in 2020 and 33 of 36 extra-point tries.

Zuerlein has converted 235 of 286 field-goal attempts and 297 of 306 extra-point tries in 135 career games with the Rams and Cowboys.

Cowboys cut Forbath to clear path for Zuerlein

The Dallas Cowboys released kicker Kai Forbath on Saturday in a move that likely clears the path for Greg Zuerlein to claim the job.

Zuerlein signed a three-year, $7.5 million contract in the offseason.

Forbath, 32, went 10 of 10 on field-goal attempts in three games for the Cowboys late last season, having joined in December after the release of Brett Maher. He also made all 10 extra-point tries.

An eight-year veteran, Forbath has a career field-goal percentage of 86.8 in 81 games with six different teams.

Zuerlein, 32, who has spent all eight of his NFL seasons with the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams, is coming off one of the worst seasons in his career. He made just 72.7 percent of his field goals, however he did convert 5 of 7 from 50 yards or longer.

Zuerlein’s 2019 production was far below his peak season of 2017 when he made his only Pro Bowl by connecting on 95.0 percent of his field goals, including 6 of 7 from 50-plus yards. His career-best 61-yard field goal came in the 2015 season.

Also on Saturday, the Cowboys waived long-snapper Joe Fortunato and injured rookie linebacker Azur Kamara. Reserve cornerback Saivion Smith was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
