Colts Pro Bowl TE Jack Doyle retires

Indianapolis Colts two-time Pro Bowl tight end Jack Doyle announced his retirement Monday after nine seasons.

Doyle, 31, released an extended statement through the Colts on Twitter. In it, he thanked his wife, family, Colts owner Jim Irsay, coaches and staff, agent, teammates and fans. Doyle was born and raised in Indianapolis.

“I now go back to being the fan I have always been and retiring from the great game of football,” Doyle wrote, in part. “I have a deep respect for the dedication and commitment it takes to be out there for your teammates. At this time, my body is telling me that is a sacrifice I can no longer make.”

Doyle finished his career with 295 catches for 2,729 yards and 24 touchdowns. He made the Pro Bowl in 2017 and 2019. He played in 131 career games, making 84 starts, all for the Colts. He joined the Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2013.

“It’s rare when a player has the opportunity to play for his hometown team, thus we are extremely thankful for the nine outstanding seasons Jack spent with the Colts, the team he grew up cheering for,” Irsay said in a statement.

The Colts also save $5.45 million in cap space, giving the club $42.5 million heading into the new year.

Seven starters miss practice for Colts, with Carson Wentz limited

Seven of the Indianapolis Colts’ 22 starters did not practice Thursday, three days out from their road contest at the Miami Dolphins.

Quarterback Carson Wentz, however, was able to practice on a limited basis for the second straight day as he deals with two sprained ankles.

Tight end Jack Doyle (back), All-Pro left guard Quenton Nelson (ankle/knee) and right tackle Braden Smith (foot/thumb) missed practice for the second straight day on offense. Three more on defense have now missed two in a row: rookie defensive end Kwity Paye (hamstring), safety Khari Willis (ankle/groin) and cornerback Rock Ya-Sin (ankle).

Right guard Mark Glowinski (knee) went from limited participation in Wednesday’s practice to being held out of Thursday’s, meaning there’s danger that Indianapolis could be down three of its starting offensive linemen come Sunday.

It wasn’t all dire news for the Colts. Left tackle Eric Fisher was back to full participation after a rest day Wednesday, and Pro Bowl linebacker Darius Leonard (ankle) returned to practice on a limited basis. Running back Jonathan Taylor (knee) remained limited for the second straight day.

Colts TE Burton (calf) expected to miss start of season

Indianapolis Colts tight end Trey Burton is expected to miss at least the first two weeks of the season, coach Frank Reich said Thursday.

The Colts open up in Jacksonville and host the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2.

Burton injured his left calf during Saturday’s practice.

The 28-year-old was released by the Chicago Bears in April before signing a one-year deal with the Colts later that month. He is expected to provide depth behind starter Jack Doyle in Indianapolis. Doyle is working his way back from a neck injury.

Burton spent his first four seasons (2014-17) with the Eagles, with Reich serving as offensive coordinator for his last two campaigns.

He left as a free agent to join the Bears on a four-year, $32 million contract, and he established career highs of 54 receptions, 569 yards and six touchdowns while starting all 16 games in 2018.

Burton underwent hernia surgery following the 2018 season and was limited to eight games (five starts) in 2019. He caught just 14 passes for 84 yards before sustaining a season-ending calf injury in November. He also underwent hip surgery in December.

Overall, Burton has 131 receptions for 1,282 yards and 12 touchdown catches in 85 career games (26 starts) with Philadelphia and Chicago.

The Colts got back wide receiver Parris Campbell on Thursday. The second-year player was in the concussion protocol after a car accident last week.

Colts TE Burton injures calf in practice

Indianapolis Colts tight end Trey Burton is expected to miss an undisclosed amount of time after sustaining a left calf injury during Saturday’s practice, coach Frank Reich said.

Burton was unable to put weight on his left leg as he was helped to the sideline, according to multiple reports.

The 28-year-old Burton was released by the Chicago Bears in April before signing a one-year deal with the Colts later that month. He is expected to provide depth behind starter Jack Doyle in Indianapolis.

Burton is best known for throwing the touchdown pass to quarterback Nick Foles on the “Philly Special” trick play that helped the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII.
