Jared Goff: ‘No concern’ if Lions draft a QB

Detroit quarterback Jared Goff said it’s “no concern” if the Lions decide to draft a quarterback next week.

He passed for 3,245 yards and 19 touchdowns in 14 games (3-10-1 record) in his first season with Detroit in 2021.

Goff, 27, was acquired in a March 2021 trade for fellow signal-caller Matthew Stafford, who went on to lead the Los Angeles Rams to a Super Bowl LVI championship.

“I trust those guys,” Goff told reporters Thursday, referring to the Lions’ front office. “They’ve expressed a lot of confidence in me and feel good about where I’m at and where I’m at with them and where we’re headed. I’m excited about. But if anything were to happen there (with drafting a QB), no, no concern.”

Goff has two years remaining on the four-year, $134 million contract he signed with the Rams in September 2019. He carries a cap hit of $31.15 million for the 2022 season, per Spotrac.

The Lions have the No. 2 pick in the first round of the draft, which begins on April 28. They also have the 32nd pick in the opening round, courtesy of the Rams from the Goff-Stafford trade.

Lions GM: Willing to trade out of No. 2 slot

Detroit general manager Brad Holmes has put the NFL on notice: The Lions are willing to trade out of the No. 2 slot in the upcoming NFL draft.

In fact, Holmes told The Detroit News on Tuesday that he’s had “dialogue with a couple of teams” already.

With the team sticking with Jared Goff as their quarterback this season and the 2022 QB class considered weaker than years past, the Lions could have multiple offers at No. 2. Further, with Jacksonville picking at No. 1 and having taken Trevor Lawrence last year, the Lions’ spot could be where the first QB gets selected.

“I think definitely we could pull that trade off, if the other team is willing, before the draft,” Holmes said. “I would say right now it’s still relatively early for those discussions, but I would expect for it to heat up, especially with the pick that we have this year.”

Holmes added that the Lions have no dependencies on what Jacksonville does ahead of them.

The Lions also pick at No. 32 overall, acquired from the Los Angeles Rams in the Matthew Stafford-Goff trade. The Lions also received the Rams’ first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft in the trade.

Speaking of Goff, Holmes said the Lions are “happy with where Jared’s at right now.”

“Jared played good football for us late in the year, so we have a lot of optimism about Jared going forward, so we have a quarterback,” Holmes told reporters.

But that doesn’t mean they won’t draft a QB and stash him behind Goff for a period of time.

“Sure, I could see some advantage of there is a young quarterback that can learn under Jared,” the second-year GM said. “I don’t think Jared would have any issues taking on that role. He’s had more younger guys with less experience behind him, so he’d be very comfortable with that.”

The Lions head into the draft with nine total picks, including two in the third round but none in the fourth.

Lions QB Jared Goff doubtful vs. Seahawks

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is doubtful to play Sunday at Seattle due to a knee injury, coach Dan Campbell told reporters Friday.

Goff missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday, and Tim Boyle is expected to start in his place when the Lions (2-12-1) visit the Seahawks (5-10).

It would be the second straight start and third of the season for Boyle, who led the team last week in a 20-16 loss to the Atlanta Falcons while Goff was on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

In his first season in Detroit, the 27-year-old Goff is completing 67 percent of his passes for 3,007 yards with 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He said earlier this week that he has a knee strain.

Boyle, 27, is 0-2 as a starter. On the season, he has completed 39 of 57 pass attempts for 264 yards, with one touchdown and three interceptions. He also started the Week 11 loss to the Cleveland Browns when Goff sat out with an oblique injury.

Lions QB Jared Goff cleared from COVID list

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff was activated Monday off the reserve/COVID-19 list after missing one game.

The Lions lost Sunday to the Atlanta Falcons behind replacement starter Tim Boyle, who threw for 187 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the 20-16 defeat.

Goff, 27, was placed on the COVID list Dec. 20. He is expected to start this Sunday when the Lions (2-12-1) visit the Seattle Seahawks (5-10).

In his first season in Detroit, Goff is completing 67 percent of his passes for 3,007 yards, 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

The Lions placed wide receiver Josh Reynolds on the COVID list Monday. Reynolds has 28 catches for 385 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games this season with the Tennessee Titans and Rams.

Lions QB Jared Goff ‘highly unlikely’ to play against Falcons

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is “highly unlikely” to play Sunday due to COVID-19, coach Dan Campbell said Friday.

Goff reported symptoms to the team and tested positive the virus. The team placed him on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Monday.

Goff, 27, had his best performance of the season in a surprise 30-12 win over the Arizona Cardinals last Sunday. He completed 21 of 26 passes for 216 yards and three touchdowns, which was good for a season-high 139.7 passer rating.

On the season, Goff has completed 67.0 percent of his passes for 3,007 yards and 17 touchdowns with eight interceptions.

The Lions (2-11-1) will visit the Atlanta Falcons (6-8) on Sunday.

If Goff is unavailable, Detroit could turn to backup signal-caller Tim Boyle for his second start of the season. Boyle completed 15 of 23 passes for 77 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in a 13-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Nov. 21.

Earlier this week, Campbell was noncommittal about whether Boyle or David Blough would start if Goff were unavailable, but he said Boyle had taken most of the scout team reps over the past month.

Lions place QB Jared Goff on COVID list

The Detroit Lions placed quarterback Jared Goff on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Monday, putting his status for this week’s game into question.

Goff, 27, is coming off his best performance of the season in a surprise 30-12 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. He completed 21 of 26 passes for 216 yards and three touchdowns, which was good for a season-high 139.7 passer rating.

On the season, Goff has completed 67 percent of his passes for 3,007 yards and 17 touchdowns with three interceptions.

Detroit also placed offensive lineman Matt Nelson on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

In other roster moves, the Lions activated cornerback Mark Gilbert and running back Jamaal Williams from the reserve/COVID-19 list and signed running back Craig Reynolds from the practice squad to the active roster. The team placed linebacker Alex Anzalone on injured reserve due to a season-ending shoulder injury.

Lions QB Jared Goff (flu) stayed home Wednesday

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff called in sick Wednesday and is one of at least five players dealing with flu-like symptoms.

Speaking to reporters via Zoom from his home, Goff said that he’s already feeling better.

The Lions (1-10-1) won for the first time this season last Sunday behind a three-touchdown game from Goff to beat the Minnesota Vikings. The performance earned the 27-year-old NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

In two games since his return from an oblique injury, Goff has a completion percentage near 70 with 467 passing yards and five touchdowns.

The Lions visit the Denver Broncos (6-6) on Sunday.

Report: Lions QB Tim Boyle to start at Cleveland

Detroit Lions quarterback Tim Boyle will make his first career NFL start Sunday in Cleveland, according to reports.

Jared Goff missed practice this week while recovering from an oblique injury sustained in last weekend’s 16-16 tie with Pittsburgh.

Boyle, 27, could remain the starter for Thursday’s Thanksgiving game against Chicago, depending on Goff’s progress.

The Lions signed Boyle to a one-year, $2.5 million contract with a $1 million signing bonus in March.

He appeared in 11 games with Green Bay during the 2019 and 2020 seasons, completing 3 of 4 passes for 15 yards.

Goff, 27, ranks 25th in the NFL with eight touchdown passes in nine starts — only one in his last five games. He is in his first season with Detroit following an offseason trade that sent Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams.

Lions QB Jared Goff (oblique) doubtful vs. Browns

The Detroit Lions listed starting quarterback Jared Goff as doubtful for their Sunday road game against the Cleveland Browns.

If Goff, who has an oblique injury, can’t go, Tim Boyle would make his first career start under center.

Goff got hurt during last Sunday in Detroit’s 16-16 tie against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He missed practice for three straight days, including Friday.

Coach Dan Campbell told reporters Friday the team is prepared to start Boyle, who saw action in eight games last season for the Green Bay Packers as Aaron Rodgers’ back-up but did not attempt a pass.

Boyle completed 3 of 4 passes for 15 yards in 2019.

“Let me say this about Tim Boyle, he lacks zero confidence, I can tell you that,” Campbell said. “If he’s our guy and see where the weather takes us, see where he takes us, but I know this, we have to be smart with him and let him work into a rhythm.”

Detroit (0-8-1) is the last NFL team still in search of its first win of the season.

Lions QB Jared Goff (oblique) misses practice again

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff did not participate in practice for the second straight day on Thursday.

Goff is nursing an oblique injury he sustained in last Sunday’s 16-16 tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Should Goff be a spectator this Sunday, Tim Boyle likely will get the nod to start for the Lions (0-8-1) against the host Browns (5-5).

Boyle, 27, remains in the 21-day practice window to be activated from injured reserve. David Blough is the only other active quarterback on the roster.

Goff, 27, is 25th in the NFL with eight touchdown passes in 2021, his first season in Detroit following the offseason trade with the Los Angeles Rams involving Matthew Stafford. He has only one touchdown pass in the past five games.

Goff was sacked four times by the Steelers and went for tests on his oblique Monday. He was sacked five times the previous week by the Philadelphia Eagles in a 44-6 loss.
