Transfer QB Jayden de Laura leaves Texas State

Transfer quarterback Jayden de Laura has left Texas State, one week after enrolling.

The school confirmed in a brief statement that de Laura withdrew, and the news came soon after de Laura settled a lawsuit regarding an alleged sexual assault case from 2018.

de Laura, one of two people sued in the 2021 civil case, was a minor when the alleged incident occurred in Hawaii, where he went to high school. He went on to play at Washington State and Arizona, and he entered the transfer portal this month after losing his starting job with the Wildcats.

As news of the settlement spread via the Texas State student newspaper, de Laura and the case drew attention, with students planning a Friday protest over his addition to the team.

Head coach G.J. Kinne told the campus publication that his staff reviewed the quarterback’s past before offering him a spot on the team.

“First, Jayden never pled guilty or was convicted of criminal charges, and he recently settled a civil case from an incident that occurred in 2018 when he was a minor in the state of Hawaii,” said Kinne in a statement before news of de Laura’s withdrawal. “During the recruitment process, our coaching staff visited with several of Jayden’s former coaches from his two previous schools, Washington State University and the University of Arizona, as well as others that know him closely. Each person not only spoke highly of his character but how he has developed into the man he is today.”

de Laura was projected to start at quarterback for Texas State, and after his commitment, incumbent starter T.J. Finley said he intended to transfer.

Finley, who was 8-5 in 2023 as the Bobcats’ starter, has transferred to Western Kentucky. It will be his fourth program after also playing at LSU and Auburn.

Arizona QB Jayde de Laura entering transfer portal

Arizona quarterback Jayden de Laura, who lost his starting job to Noah Fifita following an injury, will enter the transfer portal, he announced Monday on social media.

A fourth-year junior, de Laura wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that he will remain with the No. 14 Wildcats (9-3) for their game against No. 12 Oklahoma (10-2) in the Alamo Bowl on Thursday in San Antonio, Texas.

“On Friday, college football made a decision to allow a second undergraduate transfer,” de Laura posted on X, formerly Twitter. “I appreciate my time at the University of Arizona, but the opportunity to return as a starter my final year of college, while also getting my degree, is something I must explore.

“I want to thank Coach (Jedd) Fisch and Mrs. Fisch for (all) they had done for me these past two years,” he added. “Thank you guys for helping me not grow as just a football player, but also as a student and a man.”

De Laura was the starter through the fourth game Sept. 23 at Stanford, when he sustained an ankle injury. Redshirt freshman Noah Fifita came in and Arizona won to improve to 3-1.

Though listed as the starter, de Laura played behind Fifita and appeared in seven games, completing 89 of 128 passes (69.5 percent) for 1,120 yards and 10 touchdowns along with five interceptions.

Fifita has played in 11 games and completed 217 of 295 (73.6 percent) for 2,515 yards, 23 TDs and five picks. He was named the Pac-12 Freshman Offensive Player of the Year.

An All-Pac-12 honorable mention as a sophomore in 2022, de Laura started all 12 games in his first season with the Wildcats and threw for 3,685 yards (14th in NCAA FBS) and 25 touchdowns.

He had played two seasons at Washington State, where he was the 2021 Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year.

Wazzu QB Jayden de Laura set to transfer to Arizona

Quarterback Jayden de Laura, the Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year for Washington State this season, is transferring to Arizona.

de Laura made the announcement on Twitter, with the Honolulu product writing, “IT’S PERSONAL!!!” above a graphic that had a caption, “DESERT BOUND.”

He threw for 2,798 yards, 23 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 2021 as the Cougars went 7-6, including a Sun Bowl loss to Central Michigan.

The move came on the same day that FCS All-America quarterback Cameron Ward announced his transfer to Washington State. Ward was a star at Incarnate Word, and his head coach there, Eric Morris, was recently hired to serve as the Cougars’ offensive coordinator.

Ward passed for 4,648 yards, 47 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while guiding Incarnate Word to a 10-3 record.

In 2020, de Laura appeared in four games for Washington State and passed for 886 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions. Because he played in four or fewer games, he retained his freshman eligibility. He will have three years of eligibility left upon his arrival in Tucson, Ariz.

Freshman QB de Laura will start for Washington State

When the Washington State Cougars open their season Saturday at Oregon State, they will have a true freshman at quarterback for the first time in school history.

Jayden de Laura, one of three candidates, won the job, first-year coach Nick Rolovich announced Monday.

The other contenders were redshirt sophomore Cammon Cooper and redshirt freshman Gunner Cruz. The (Spokane, Wash.) Spokesman-Review cited multiple sources over the weekend in reporting that de Laura would get the nod.

de Laura takes over for Anthony Gordon, who completed 71.6 percent of his passes for 5,579 yards with 48 touchdowns vs. 16 interceptions as a senior for the Cougars last season.

Washington State went 6-7 overall and 3-6 in the Pac-12 a season ago.

Rolovich, who spent four seasons as head coach at Hawaii before taking over when Mike Leach left Washington State for Mississippi State, had been trying to lure de Laura to that school.

de Laura guided St. Louis School in Honolulu to consecutive state titles, including a senior season that saw him rack up 3,452 yards passing and 29 touchdowns.
