Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney on drops: ‘That’s on me’

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney didn’t have a very good week. And his performance in a season-opening loss last Thursday was pretty awful, too.

Toney addressed reporters Wednesday for the first time since the Chiefs’ 21-20 loss to the Detroit Lions, a game that saw Toney drop two crucial passes, one that ended up going for a Lions pick-6. Toney has been the butt of social media jokes and memes since the loss, but it’s his team he most cares about.

“In reality, I told coach, I told Pat (Mahomes), I told all the guys, that’s on me,” Toney said. “At the end of the day, y’all count on me and rely on me to make certain plays and I have to be able to do that.”

Toney finished with one catch for 1 yard against the Lions on a team-high-tying five targets. The Chiefs needed a go-to receiver against the Lions with All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce missing the game with a knee injury.

Toney missed training camp after having surgery to repair a partial tear in his meniscus. He played in seven games (three starts) for the Chiefs in 2022 after getting traded from the New York Giants. So, he’s still trying to get things figured out.

Toney has had the full support of his teammates and coaches, including Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who told him to just settle down.

Mahomes said after the game he’s sure “those drops will disappear.”

“I have trust in KT. He missed a lot of training camp,” Mahomes said Thursday. “Obviously, he wanted to play and fought in rehab hard so he could play. Stuff is not always going to go your way, obviously, he would have wanted to catch a few of those in the game, but I have trust that he is going to be the guy that I go to in those crucial moments and he’s going to make the catch and win us some games like he did last year and get him more and more reps.”

As for Toney, he’s looking straight ahead to Jacksonville on Sunday in Week 2.

“Just thinking about next week and how I can make plays,” Toney said. “I’m not going to dwell on the past.”

Chiefs’ Kadarius Toney set for opener; Chris Jones remains a holdout

Wide receiver Kadarius Toney has recovered from knee surgery and will be on the field Thursday night when the Kansas City Chiefs open the season against the Detroit Lions. Defensive tackle Chris Jones is another story.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Sunday that Toney is “good to go” after missing most of training camp since arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee on July 25.

As for Jones, who is holding out in a contract dispute, he did not report to practice again Sunday.

“I don’t know when he’s coming or not coming,” Reid said.

Jones, 29, has been incurring daily fines of $50,000 since the start of training camp. He said on social media last month that he can afford to forfeit his weekly game checks and is prepared to sit out until Week 8.

A four-time Pro Bowl selection, Jones has one season remaining on the four-year, $80 million contract he signed with the Chiefs in 2020. He’s scheduled to make a base salary of $19.5 million this season, plus bonuses.

Jones finished third in Defensive Player of the Year balloting last season after matching his career best of 15.5 sacks. The two-time Super Bowl champion has 65 sacks in 107 games (86 starts) over seven NFL seasons with the Chiefs.

As for Toney, 24, he had 16 catches for 171 yards and two touchdowns in nine games split between the New York Giants and Chiefs last season. The Chiefs acquired Toney from the Giants on Oct. 27 in exchange for a compensatory third-round pick and a sixth-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Toney’s biggest moments with Kansas City came in the 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. Toney set a Super Bowl record with a 65-yard punt return that set up a fourth-quarter touchdown. He also caught a 5-yard scoring pass earlier in the final period.

Report: Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney (knee) expected back for season’s start

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney, after aggravating a knee injury on Sunday, is expected to miss more training camp practices and return in time for the regular season, ESPN reported Monday.

Toney had “tweaked his knee” while catching punts prior to the first day of camp on Sunday, head coach Andy Reid said that day. Toney had an offseason surgical procedure on the knee.

Toney, 24, had 16 catches for 171 yards and two touchdowns in nine games split between the New York Giants and Kansas City Chiefs last season.

Toney has totaled 55 receptions for 591 yards and two touchdowns in 19 games (eight starts) since being selected by the Giants in the first round (20th overall pick) of the 2021 NFL Draft.

He had played in 10 games as a rookie and two in 2022 for the Giants, and then seven with Kansas City as injuries have been an issue for him.

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney “tweaked his knee” while catching punts prior to Sunday’s training camp practice, head coach Andy Reid said.

Reid did not provide any other specifics on Toney, who did not participate in the session.

Toney, 24, had 16 catches for 171 yards and two touchdowns in nine games split between the New York Giants and Kansas City Chiefs last season. The Chiefs acquired Toney from the Giants on Oct. 27 in exchange for a compensatory third-round pick and a sixth-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Broncos WR Courtland Sutton (hamstring) out vs. Chiefs

Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton has been ruled out for Sunday’s home game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Sutton sustained a hamstring injury in the Broncos’ 10-9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday.

The 27-year-old has played in every game this season for Denver (3-9). He has team-leading totals in catches (52) and receiving yards (688), although just one touchdown reception.

Linebacker Dakota Allen (hamstring) and fullback/tight end Andrew Beck (hamstring) also been ruled out against Kansas City (9-3).

Defensive tackle D.J. Jones (shoulder), linebacker Justin Strnad (knee) and guard Dalton Risner (shoulder/back) are questionable for the game.

Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney (hamstring) was limited in practice for the third straight day on Friday. He is questionable to play on Sunday.

Toney, 23, has six catches for 69 yards and a touchdown in three games with Kansas City after being acquired in a midseason trade with the New York Giants.

Guard Joe Thuney (ankle) also is questionable for Sunday’s game despite participating in full for the third consecutive day in practice.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes unfazed by foot issue

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes downplayed concern that his bruised foot will affect his status for Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos.

Mahomes said he felt fine on Wednesday and didn’t believe that the injury would be an issue for this weekend’s game. The 2018 NFL MVP was expected to participate in practice later in the day.

“It has felt good,” Mahomes said. “You always deal with bruises and little things throughout the NFL season. Luckily for me, it’s a bruise and something I can bounce back from. I can be back out there in practice and get better, which is what we’re trying to do.”

Mahomes, 27, sustained the injury while being sacked by Cincinnati Bengals edge rusher Joseph Ossai late in the fourth quarter. That was the final offensive play of the game for Kansas City, which saw Cincinnati run out the clock in the Bengals’ 27-24 victory on Sunday.

Wide receiver Kadarius Toney did not play in that game — or the Chiefs’ previous contest — due to a hamstring injury.

Toney, however, was expected to participate in practice on Wednesday.

“We’ll see,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said of Toney’s potential return to action this weekend. “I’m going to let him get out there and work a little bit. We’ll see how he does with that. We’re not going to bring him back and have him hurt it again.”

Toney, 23, has six catches for 69 yards and a touchdown in three games with the Chiefs after being acquired in a midseason trade with the New York Giants.

Reports: Chiefs acquire WR Kadarius Toney from Giants

The Kansas City Chiefs acquired wide receiver Kadarius Toney from the New York Giants on Thursday for a third-round pick and a sixth-round pick, ESPN and NFL Network reported.

Both picks are 2023. However, ESPN reports the third-round pick is conditional while NFL Network reports it’s a compensatory pick in Round 3.

A first-round pick in 2021, Toney has reportedly been battling a hamstring injury all season and hasn’t played since Week 2. He has just two catches for zero yards and two rushes for 23 yards.

In 10 games (four starts) as a rookie last year, Toney caught 39 passes for 420 yards.

Toney also saw 60 percent of his snaps from the slot in 2021 and could eventually become the Chiefs’ primary slot receiver.

Giants WR Kadarius Toney injures other hamstring

New York Giants wide receiver Kadarius Toney did not travel to England because of injuries to both hamstrings, head coach Brian Daboll confirmed Friday.

Toney will miss his third consecutive game when the Giants (3-1) face the Green Bay Packers (3-1) in Sunday’s Week 5 contest in London.

Daboll said Toney was making progress with the original hamstring injury that has plagued him since the preseason when he tweaked the other hamstring in practice Thursday.

Toney, 23, was limited to seven snaps in New York’s 21-20 victory over the Tennessee Titans in Week 1 and 28 snaps — with two catches for zero yards — in a 19-16 win over the Carolina Panthers in Week 2.

A first-round draft pick in 2021, Toney has just 41 catches for 420 yards and zero touchdowns in 12 career games (five starts).

Giants WR Kadarius Toney (hamstring) doubtful vs. Cowboys

New York Giants wide receiver Kadarius Toney did not participate in practice for the second straight day Saturday and is doubtful to play in Monday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Toney, 23, has been nursing a sore hamstring since the preseason. He was limited to seven snaps in New York’s 21-20 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sept. 11 and 28 snaps — with two catches for zero yards — in a 19-16 win over the Carolina Panthers last Sunday.

Rookie receiver Wan’Dale Robinson (knee) and cornerbacks Justin Layne (concussion), Nick McCloud (hamstring) and Aaron Robinson (appendix) have been ruled out versus the Cowboys.

Starting defensive tackle Leonard Williams (knee) is considered doubtful, while linebackers Azeez Ojulari (calf) and rookie Kayvon Thibodeaux (knee) are questionable to face Dallas.

Report: Giants WR Kadarius Toney had knee procedure

New York Giants wide receiver Kadarius Toney reportedly is recovering from a minor knee procedure.

Toney was wearing a red no-contact jersey during organized team activities this week following arthroscopic surgery, but he is expected to be ready for training camp, the New York Daily News reported Saturday.

Toney, 23, was the Giants’ first-round pick (20th overall) in 2021. He caught 39 passes for 420 yards and no scores in 10 games (four starts) during his rookie season.

He got off to a slow start last season after a July stint on the COVID-19 list and missed six of the last seven games due to an ankle injury.
