Report: LB Joey Bosa reworks deal to stay with Chargers

A day after Khalil Mack reportedly restructured his contract to remain with the Los Angeles Chargers, teammate and fellow defensive star Joey Bosa followed suit on Thursday, per an ESPN report.

Bosa, 28, had two years left on a five-year, $135 million extension he signed in 2020 and was a potential trade or cut candidate before restructuring his deal.

The four-time Pro Bowl selection and 2016 Defensive Rookie of the Year has missed time the past two seasons with injuries, playing in just 14 games. Bosa’s 2023 season ended in Week 11 when he sprained his foot.

Drafted No. 3 overall by the Chargers in 2016, Bosa has 67 sacks, 321 tackles, 15 forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries in 93 games (84 starts).

Mack agreed to restructure his deal, ESPN reported on Wednesday.

Reports: Chargers to acquire LB Khalil Mack from Bears

The Chicago Bears are trading six-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Khalil Mack to the Los Angeles Chargers in exchange for a 2022 second-round draft pick and a 2023 sixth-round pick, NFL Network and ESPN reported Thursday.

The move pairs Mack with Joey Bosa for a Chargers team that must face Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson and Derek Carr twice a year in the AFC West.

Trades cannot be made official until March 16, the first day of the 2022 NFL league year.

Once approved, the deal would give the Bears picks No. 39 and 48 in the second round. Chicago traded its 2022 first-round pick to the New York Giants on draft day 2021 to move up and select quarterback Justin Fields.

Mack returns to the division after playing his first four NFL seasons with the then-Oakland Raiders. He was voted NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2016 when he had 11 sacks, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and one interception for a touchdown.

In eight seasons with the Raiders (2014-17) and Bears (2018-21), Mack has started 116 of 117 games and amassed 467 tackles, 76.5 sacks, 23 forced fumbles, 10 fumble recoveries, 22 pass breakups and three interceptions. He was named to the Pro Bowl six consecutive seasons from 2015 to 2020 and earned first-team All-Pro honors three times.

Mack played only seven games for Chicago in 2021 before undergoing foot surgery that cut short his season.

Report: Bears LB Khalil Mack out Sunday, maybe longer

The Chicago Bears will rest Pro Bowl linebacker Khalil Mack for Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers as he continues to deal with a foot injury he suffered in Week 3, NFL Network is reporting.

The team is also considering adding him to injured reserve, which would keep him out a minimum of three games.

Mack has started all seven games for the Bears (3-4) this season, recording six sacks and 19 tackles.

Mack failed to record a sack for just the second time this season in a blowout loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Mack, 30, has started every game in six of the previous seven seasons dating back to his rookie season. He played in 14 games (13 starts) in 2018.

The Bears listed the three-time All-Pro as doubtful on the latest injury report.

Bears LB Mack (back) questionable for Monday night

Chicago Bears linebacker Khalil Mack is questionable to play Monday night against the Los Angeles Rams because of a back injury, the team announced Saturday.

Mack did not practice Friday and took part in limited drills Saturday. Earlier this week, Bears head coach Matt Nagy expressed optimism that Mack could play in the prime-time matchup.

In six games this season, Mack has 4 1/2 sacks, a fumble recovery and six tackles for losses. The five-time Pro Bowl defender is in his third season with Chicago, which is off to a 5-1 start thanks largely to its defense.

The Bears listed four other players as questionable: defensive backs Buster Skrine (ankle) and Deon Bush (hamstring), and offensive linemen Jason Spriggs (thumb, back) and Rashaad Coward (finger). The team also ruled out defensive back Sherrick McManis because of a hamstring injury.

NFL Week 7 Football Props: Patriots vs. Bears

NFL Week 7 Football Props: Patriots vs. Bears

It’s official: The Patriots are legitimate. Except for those living in New England, most people were silently hoping that this would be the year that the AFC reign of the Patriots would end. Following a 1-2 start, Patriots fans may have been a bit skeptical, but likely remembered that they’ve dropped at least one of the first four games over in 2017 and 2016. Since week 3, New England has put up 38+ points, and just last week took down the previously undefeated Kansas City Chiefs in a 43-40 shootout. New England is strong, and looking to continue their hot streak.

Now the Bears have certainly found their guy in Mitch Trubisky. He’s tossed his way to 11 touchdowns, only 4 interceptions, and a QBR of 105.6. He’s put together a solid 3-2 start for the Bears, who currently sit atop the NFC North, even though the Vikings and Packers are right behind them. Four of their five games have been decided by less than one score. In those games, they’re 2-2, and allowed both the Packers and Dolphins to stage 4th quarter comebacks that led to losses for the Bears. The rout over the Buccaneers gave Chicago faithful a great deal of hope, but Sunday’s matchup with New England will be a true test for them. They come in as 3 point underdogs, but their explosive offense could prove challenging for the Patriots. Plus Khalil Mack will likely make Tom Brady’s life a bit more difficult.
