Reports: Chiefs sign WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling

The Kansas City Chiefs signed free agent wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to a three-year deal worth $30 million, ESPN and NFL Network reported Thursday.

The move comes a day after the Chiefs traded Tyreek Hill to Miami for five draft picks. Valdes-Scantling was reportedly visiting the Chiefs on Wednesday.

Valdes-Scantling, 27, can earn up to $36 million with incentives, per the reports.

Valdes-Scantling played the first four seasons of his career in Green Bay after the Packers selected him in the fifth round of the 2018 draft.

Valdes-Scantling caught 26 passes for 430 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games (seven starts) in 2021. He spent time on injured reserve last season with a hamstring injury.

Valdes-Scantling has 123 catches for 2,153 yards and 13 TDs in 59 career games (39 starts) for the Packers. He played in the shadow of Davante Adams all four years in Green Bay.

The 6-foot-4 Valdes-Scantling ran his 40 at the scouting combine in 4.37 seconds. Hill has 4.29 speed.

David Bakhtiari (knee) questionable vs. 49ers

Green Bay Packers All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari didn’t practice Thursday and is officially listed as questionable to play Saturday against the San Francisco 49ers.

Wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling (back) is listed as doubtful.

Bakhtiari was limited in practice Wednesday after not practicing Tuesday. He returned in Week 18 against Detroit and played 27 snaps in his first action since tearing an ACL late last year.

However, the Packers are expected to get back cornerback Jaire Alexander (shoulder), linebacker Za’Darius Smith (back) and WR Randall Cobb (core muscle) against the Niners. All three practiced Thursday and Green Bay is expected to activate Smith and Cobb off injured reserve.

Alexander was activated from injured reserve on Dec. 29 but hasn’t played since Week 4 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Packers put WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling on COVID list

The Green Bay Packers put wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday.

Valdes-Scantling is coming off one of his best performances of the season. He caught a season-high five passes for 98 yards and a touchdown in Sunday’s win over the Baltimore Ravens.

It will be a tight window for Valdes-Scantling to be cleared in time for Green Bay’s Week 16 game against the visiting Cleveland Browns. The teams play Saturday as part of the Christmas Day lineup.

Valdes-Scantling, 27, has 25 catches for 427 yards and three touchdowns on the season.

Packers defensive tackle Kenny Clark was put on the COVID list Thursday.

Packers put WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling (hamstring) on IR

The Green Bay Packers put starting wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling on injured reserve Saturday.

Valdes-Scantling, 26, is dealing with a hamstring injury and will have to miss at least three games.

The team elevated WR Equanimeous St. Brown from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Packers are using the COVID-19 replacement option for St. Brown; defensive lineman Tyler Lancaster is on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Valdes-Scantling has six catches for 76 yards and a touchdown this season in three starts. He has 103 career receptions for 1,799 yards and 11 TDs in 51 games (35 starts), all for the Packers.

Valdes-Scantling says he received death threats after fumble

Wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling announced over social media that he received death threats after his fumble in overtime led to the Green Bay Packers’ loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

The Colts (7-3) benefited from Valdes-Scantling’s first career fumble in 42 games and kicked a game-winning field goal for a 34-31 victory over the Packers (7-3).

“Death threats over a football game?” the 26-year-old Valdes-Scantling wrote on Twitter. “Jesus you people need help. It’s actually sick. I’m good. My team got my back.”

Fellow Packers wide receiver Davante Adams came to his defense over social media.

“Been there my dawg,” Adams wrote on Twitter. “You know we got you! We all you need”

Valdes-Scantling reeled in a 47-yard reception late in the fourth quarter to set up Green Bay’s game-tying field goal. He finished with three catches for 55 yards, and he also drew a pass interference penalty late in the second quarter to set up a Packers’ touchdown.

“I know he’s really hurting right now,” Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur said Sunday. “He made so many plays for us and not only in the pass game but in the run game, stuff that you guys probably don’t even notice that we’re not getting the yardage that we get if he’s not blocking his (expletive) off.

“So I can live with MVS. I’ve got more confidence in him now than probably ever. I think he continues to get better each and every day. Every time we go out there, he’s providing big plays.”
