QB Myles Brennan exits transfer portal, staying at LSU

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan will return to the Tigers in 2022 after withdrawing from the transfer portal.

“There’s no place like home. Let’s ride tiger nation!” Brennan tweeted on Thursday.

An LSU spokesman confirmed to ESPN that Brennan, who entered the portal Nov. 1 as a graduate transfer, will remain in Baton Rouge under new head coach Brian Kelly.

Brennan has been beset by injuries since starting the first three games of the 2020 season. He sustained a torn abdominal muscle that ended that season, then broke his non-throwing arm this summer and required surgery.

Brennan backed up Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow during the 2019 national championship season and has 1,712 career passing yards with 13 touchdowns against six interceptions with the Tigers.

Max Johnson, who replaced Brennan in 2020 and started all 12 games for LSU this season under former coach Ed Orgeron, entered the transfer portal earlier this month.

On Wednesday, the Tigers signed five-star quarterback Walker Howard from Lafayette, La. He was ranked as the No. 5 QB prospect and the No. 34 overall recruit in the Class of 2022 by the 247 Sports composite.

LSU (6-6) concludes its season against Kansas State (7-5) in the Jan. 4 Texas Bowl in Houston.

LSU QB Myles Brennan enters transfer portal

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan has entered the transfer portal.

Brennan has been beset by injuries since starting the first three games of the 2020 season. He sustained a torn abdominal muscle that ended his season and then broke his non-throwing arm this summer that required surgery.

Max Johnson, who replaced Brennan in 2020, has started all eight games for LSU this season.

Brennan is in his fifth year at LSU. He backed up Joe Burrow in 2019.

Brennan has 1,712 career passing yards with 13 touchdowns against six interceptions with the Tigers.

LSU head coach Ed Orgeron said Monday that Brennan was “teary-eyed” over the decision.

LSU QB Myles Brennan needs arm surgery, out indefinitely

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan is sidelined indefinitely after sustaining a significant injury to his left (non-throwing) arm that will require surgery.

It is the second major injury in as many seasons for the senior signal-caller, who threw for 1,112 yards and 11 touchdowns in the first three games of the 2020 campaign before tearing an abdominal muscle. That ailment ultimately cost Brennan the remainder of his season, and while Tigers coach Ed Orgeron did not put a timeline on Brennan’s return, he described the injury as “severe.”

Orgeron added in a school press release, “Myles has done everything we have asked of him this summer and was in the fight to be the starting quarterback at LSU.”

Brennan has appeared in 20 career games for LSU, throwing for 1,712 yards and 13 touchdown passes with six interceptions.

The Tigers open their season Sept. 4 at UCLA. If Brennan is unable to play, LSU likely will turn to sophomore Max Johnson. The two were expected to compete for the starting job for the Tigers, who are coming off a disappointing 5-5 season.

LSU has freshman Garrett Nussmeier as the No. 3 quarterback on its depth chart.

LSU QB Brennan likely out for season

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan likely is finished for the season as he continues to recover from an injury to his abdomen and hip, coach Ed Oregron said Wednesday.

“It doesn’t look like he’s going to be back, unless some miraculous thing happens,” Orgeron said.

He added Brennan could require surgery for the injury, which occurred Oct. 10 in a 45-41 loss to Missouri.

It’s the latest setback for the Tigers, who won the College Football Playoff last season behind Heisman Trophy-winner Joe Burrow.

Undefeated in 2019, LSU is 2-3. Saturday’s game against No. 1 Alabama was postponed because of a COVID-19 outbreak within the Tigers program.

The Tigers are scheduled to play at Arkansas on Nov. 18. Orgeron will turn to either TJ Finley or Max Johnson, both freshmen, at quarterback.

Brennan, a junior, played in the first three games of the season. He completed 79 of 131 passes for 1,112 yards and 11 touchdowns with three interceptions.

Brennan tweeted Wednesday that he will keep working to return.

“Just have to keep fighting,” he wrote. “Looking forward to being back out there with my guys.”

LSU QB Brennan questionable for Saturday

LSU junior quarterback Myles Brennan might need another week to recover from what is being labeled a “significant lower-body injury,” potentially leaving the Tigers to find another option against South Carolina on Saturday.

Head coach Ed Orgeron listed Brennan’s status as questionable, adding that the redshirt junior, who is replacing No. 1 overall NFL draft pick Joe Burrow, would not have played on Saturday against Florida if the game against the Gators was contested.

The LSU-Florida game was rescheduled for Dec. 12 after a COVID-19 outbreak among the Florida program.

Orgeron is hoping Brennan can return to practice by Friday, otherwise he will have to switch to a true freshman at quarterback to guide his 1-2 team. LSU has a pair of options in TJ Finley and Max Johnson, although neither has seen any action this season.

“I really think both of them are phenomenal young players,” Orgeron said. “It’s hard to distinguish the difference between them, they’re both so good.”

One way to differentiate is that Johnson can incorporate a running component to his QB play, while Finley is more of a traditional drop-back passer.

In three games this season, Brennan is 79 of 131 for 1,112 yards and 11 touchdowns with three interceptions. He had just 70 pass attempts in two official seasons before this year.

LSU’s Brennan doubtful to play against No. 10 Florida

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan likely will be sidelined Saturday when the Tigers meet No. 10 Florida.

Coach Ed Orgeron said Wednesday that Brennan was doubtful for the game as he felt the lingering effects of a hit he took on a play near the end of the first half of LSU’s loss to Missouri last weekend.

Brennan stayed in the game and was 29-of-48 passing for 430 yards and four touchdowns in the 45-41 loss for the defending national champions (1-2). He didn’t practice Tuesday and won’t on Wednesday, Orgeron said.

With 1,112 passing yards, Brennan is second in the SEC behind K.J. Costello (1,168 yards) of Mississippi State. His 11 touchdown passes are second to Florida’s Kyle Trask (14).

If Brennan is unable to play, either T.J. Finley or Max Johnson, both freshmen, will get the call. Johnson is the son of Super Bowl-winning quarterback Brad Johnson.

Whether the game is played as scheduled in Gainesville, Fla., remains up in the air, however.

Florida announced Tuesday it was pausing football activities amid a surge in positive COVID-19 tests. While the school didn’t state how many players were affected, ESPN reported Wednesday that the Gators had 19 positive tests.

Brennan to start at QB for LSU

LSU will begins its national championship defense on Saturday with Myles Brennan at quarterback.

Coach Ed Orgeron said Monday that Brennan will be the one to take over for Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow, who was the No. 1 pick of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. The Tigers open the delayed season at home against Mississippi State.

Orgeron said he is confident in Brennan, a redshirt junior, even though he isn’t battle-tested.

“I’ve always believed in Myles Brennan,” Orgeron told reporters Monday. “I think he’s an excellent young man, he’s waited his turn, a lot of respect, has a strong arm — probably a stronger arm than Joe Burrow had — can extend plays with his feet, not quite like Joe did. He’s learning the offense.”

He continued: “The only thing that we don’t know, and I do believe that he’s gonna do very well, is how he’s going to do in the fire. And the only way to know that is put them into fire. I trust Myles. He’s become a team leader. His short passing game is a strength. The deep ball is something that he is very good at. I think that takes time for him and his receivers to get the timing down, and hopefully improve on that throughout the year.”

Brennan, 21, came to LSU as a four-star recruit in the Class of 2017, ranked as the nation’s No. 6 pro-style quarterback by the 247Sports composite.

The 6-foot-4 Mississippi native has appeared in 17 games for the Tigers, completing 42 of 70 passes for 600 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.
