Jets QB Aaron Rodgers throws in warmups without crutches

Aaron Rodgers spent about five minutes throwing during the New York Jets’ pregame warmups Sunday afternoon before their home game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The injured star quarterback did not appear to need crutches to get around the stadium, less than five weeks since he tore his Achilles in his Jets debut.

According to reporters on the scene, Rodgers threw to a Jets staff member about two hours before kickoff and threw a few to Sauce Gardner, the Jets’ No. 1 cornerback who was out for Sunday’s game due to a concussion.

Rodgers underwent surgery on his Achilles Sept. 13 with noted sports physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Rodgers has said his goal is to return this season.

“It’s pretty obvious I’m well ahead of my normal protocols when it comes to rehab for this kind of thing, but that was always what my mindset was,” Rodgers said on “The Pat McAfee Show” Oct. 3. “… Being as smart as possible not trying to stress the Achilles, but stressing the Achilles in a way that allows me to do movement quicker and speed up whatever timeline that has been the standard for this type of injury.”

The standard recovery timetable for an Achilles tear usually lands in the three-month range, after which NFL players can ramp up their rehabilitation to return to action. ElAttrache used a “speed bridge” technique that is said to promote faster healing.

“There’s nothing normal about how I’m attacking this rehab,” Rodgers said. “The common practice is about six weeks in a boot, and I was in a shoe in 13 days.”

Report: 49ers’ Brock Purdy to ramp up throwing program

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is moving closer to being ready for the start of the 2023 regular season.

NFL Network reported Monday that Purdy will spend two weeks in Jacksonville, Fla., under the eye of quarterbacks coach Will Hewlett and orthopedic specialist Tom Gormely, who is based in the city.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said earlier this month that Purdy was ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation from ulnar collateral ligament surgery on his right (throwing) elbow. The procedure took place March 10.

Purdy, 23, was injured during the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Shanahan had said before the NFL draft that Purdy could miss the first four weeks of the regular season.

But when he talked to reporters on June 6, Shanahan praised the hard work Purdy had been putting in to be ready to play.

“Brock’s been great on his rehab,” Shanahan said. “He’s been as obsessed about it as you can be. That’s why he’s ahead of schedule.”

San Francisco opens the season on Sept. 10 against the Steelers in Pittsburgh.

The 49ers have options at the position. Trey Lance is returning from a severe right ankle injury that required multiple surgeries, and free agent Sam Darnold joining the QB room after stops with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers.

Purdy, the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, was thrust into action as a rookie following season-ending injuries to Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo, and he was a revelation for the 49ers.

He went 5-0 as a starter to finish the regular season, leading San Francisco to the NFC West title. He completed 67.1 percent of his passes for 1,374 yards, with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions.

In the postseason, Purdy was 2-1 with three touchdowns, no interceptions and 569 yards.

49ers QB Brock Purdy expects to be throwing in training camp

Quarterback Brock Purdy expects to be throwing a football by June and could be on schedule to practice with few limitations when the San Francisco 49ers open training camp in late July.

Purdy, 23, had surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right arm earlier this month, but 49ers general manager John Lynch said the second-year quarterback would be in line to start if the season began now.

But the trouble with assessing Purdy in April is the only real measure of his progress comes when throwing begins.

“The protocol is you start throwing at three months, but it all depends on how your therapy and your range of motion and everything goes up until that point,” Purdy told the San Jose Mercury-News. “There are definitely some boxes I have to check off first before I get to that point, but that’s the plan as of now.”

Purdy made a stunning rise from being the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to leading the 49ers into the NFC Championship Game.

He said the size of the elbow brace he’s wearing during the first part of his post-op rehab makes it appears as if he has a “bionic arm.”

“When you first get in it after surgery, you’re in it at 90 degrees. From there, you can start opening it up to help with your range of motion,” Purdy said. “It is just to keep your arm safe when you’re out walking around or doing therapy. But at night, I can take it off and just do some normal motions with just looking at my arm.”

When he gets back on the field, he’ll have company in the form of Trey Lance and Sam Darnold, a pair of former No. 3 overall picks. Lance, the third pick in 2021, began last season as San Francisco’s starter but sustained a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2.

Darnold signed as an unrestricted free agent after two seasons with the Carolina Panthers, who acquired him from the New York Jets. The Jets drafted Darnold with the third pick in the 2018 draft.

Purdy, selected with the 262nd and final pick in the 2022 draft, emerged as the No. 1 quarterback for the 49ers after Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo went down with injuries. He was undefeated in seven games before losing his eighth, the NFC Championship Game, after injuring his elbow in the first quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Giants RB Saquon Barkley to open camp on PUP list

Saquon Barkley will open New York Giants training camp on the physically unable to perform list as he continues to rehab from a torn ACL.

Barkley was one of six players the Giants placed on the active/PUP list Thursday. The team’s first full-squad training camp practice is next Wednesday.

Barkley tore the ACL last September during Week 2 of the 2020 season. He told the New York Post this week he didn’t know when he would be medically cleared to return to practice.

“Yeah, I’ve been asked a lot,” Barkley said. “I guess that’s the theme of the summer, going to be when I’ll be back. But no, I don’t have that answer, to be honest. … It’s a fun process, but it’s a tough process at the same time. Just have to continue to listen to my body, listen to my trainers, listen to the coaches and take it day-by-day.”

The No. 2 overall draft pick in 2018, Barkley won Offensive Rookie of the Year that season but has struggled to stay healthy since. In 31 games over three seasons, Barkley has amassed 2,344 rushing yards for 17 touchdowns on 4.7 yards per attempt, plus 149 receptions for 1,219 yards and six scores.

New York picked up Barkley’s fifth-year option for the 2022 season, guaranteeing him $7.217 million.

Newly-signed tight end Kyle Rudolph (foot), third-round draft pick and cornerback Aaron Robinson (core muscle), center Jonotthan Harrison (hamstring), tackle Matt Peart (back) and linebacker Oshane Ximines (hamstring) were also placed on the active/PUP list.

In addition, first-round wide receiver Kadarius Toney was placed on the COVID-19/reserve list because of a positive test. The rookie was the Giants’ No. 20 overall pick in April’s draft.
