Reports: Dolphins ink OT Terron Armstead to five-year deal

Free-agent offensive tackle Terron Armstead signed a five-year, $75 million contract to join the Miami Dolphins, according to multiple reports Tuesday.

The deal can reach as much as $87.5 million after incentives, the reports said, and $43.37 million is guaranteed.

The 6-foot-5 Armstead spent his first nine NFL seasons with the New Orleans Saints, who selected him in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. By the end of the decade, he’d team with right tackle Ryan Ramczyk to form one of the NFL’s best duo of tackles. Armstead was named to the Pro Bowl three straight seasons, from 2018 through 2020.

Armstead, 30, was impacted by injuries in each of his nine years with the Saints. He never played a full season, and a knee injury in 2021 limited him to eight games.

In 145 possible games with the Saints, he played in 97 (93 starts).

He told SiriusXM NFL Radio recently that he understood the Saints’ salary cap constraints but was keeping the possibility open of staying with the Saints.

Instead, he will join a Dolphins team that plans to move forward with Tua Tagovailoa at quarterback. Miami made several other additions on offense this offseason, including running backs Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert, wide receiver Cedrick Wilson and left guard Connor Williams.

Miami allowed 2.4 sacks per-game last season, which was tied for eighth-most in the league.

Report: Dolphins pursuing LT Terron Armstead

The Miami Dolphins are pursuing free agent left tackle Terron Armstead, the Miami Herald reported Sunday.

The Dolphins placed their interest in La’el Collins “on hold” to focus on Armstead, per the report.

Armstead, 30, earned three Pro Bowl selections (2018-20) over nine seasons with the New Orleans Saints.

He started 93 of his 97 games in that span but missed nine games in 2021 with knee, shoulder and elbow injuries.

Armstead was a third-round pick by New Orleans in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Saints OL Terron Armstead (elbow) out several weeks

New Orleans Saints left tackle Terron Armstead is going to miss several weeks with an injured elbow, NFL Network reported Monday.

The injury is not believed to be season-ending for the nine-year veteran, who has made the Pro Bowl in each of the past three seasons.

Armstead, 30, was hurt in the first quarter of the Saints’ victory at New England on Sunday when he collided with running back Tony Jones during a block. Armstead left the game and did not return. James Hurst replaced him.

Armstead has played in 92 games (88 starts) for the Saints since the team selected him in the third round of the 2013 draft. He has yet to play in all 16 games of a season.

The Saints (2-1) host the New York Giants (0-3) in Week 4.

Saints LT Armstead tests positive for COVID-19

New Orleans Saints left tackle Terron Armstead tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos.

“Found out this morning that I tested positive for Covid!” Armstead posted Saturday on Twitter. “I feel completely normal and ready to go play with my guys tomorrow. Unfortunately that can’t happen and while that (expletive) sucks, I can’t downplay the impact covid has had on so many lives. Everyone stay safe.”

A Pro Bowl selection in 2018 and 2019, the 29-year-old Armstead has started all 10 games this season.

Armstead has started 81 of his 85 games since New Orleans drafted him in the third round in 2013.

James Hurst, 28, is listed as the backup on the depth chart and could start Sunday when the Saints (8-2) put their seven-game winning streak on the line at Denver (4-6).
