Saints S Tyrann Mathieu rejoins team

Safety Tyrann Mathieu joined the New Orleans Saints at training camp on Wednesday after missing the first six days to address a “personal matter.”

Mathieu, born in New Orleans and developed at LSU, reported to camp on Tuesday night. He signed a three-year, $28.3 million contract in May and is expected to start alongside Marcus Maye in the reconstructed Saints’ defense.

Head coach Dennis Allen said earlier this week he didn’t have a timetable for Mathieu to join the team on the practice field.

The three-time All-Pro, who turned 30 on May 13, started 16 games for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021 and posted 76 tackles, three interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), three fumble recoveries and one sack.

A third-round pick out of LSU in 2013, Mathieu has 26 interceptions (three pick-sixes) and 10 sacks in 129 contests (120 starts) with the Arizona Cardinals (2013-17), Houston Texans (2018) and Chiefs. He won Super Bowl LIV in his first season with Kansas City.

Saints announce signing of S Tyrann Mathieu

The New Orleans Saints on Wednesday introduced the newest member of their defensive secondary and the return of native son Tyrann Mathieu.

Mathieu signed a three-year contract worth $33 million earlier in the week.

“This is the place I’ve always wanted to be,” Mathieu said during a press conference.

Mathieu, who was born and raised in New Orleans, visited with the Saints in early April.

“The Saints were the only visit that I went on. From the get-go I knew where I wanted to be,” he said.

The three-time All-Pro, who turns 30 on May 13, started 16 games for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021 and posted 76 tackles, three interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), three fumble recoveries and one sack.

Reports: Saints agree on deal with S Tyrann Mathieu

The Saints are in agreement on a contract with All-Pro safety and New Orleans native Tyrann Mathieu, multiple outlets reported Monday.

The deal is expected to be signed Tuesday, per the reports.

Mathieu, who was born and raised in New Orleans, visited with the Saints in early April.

The New Orleans Saints are planning an “aggressive push” to sign free agent Tyrann Mathieu after failing to land a safety in the draft, ESPN reported Sunday.

Mathieu, who was born and raised in New Orleans, visited with the Saints in early April.

The three-time All-Pro, who turns 30 on May 13, started 16 games for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021 and posted 76 tackles, three interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), three fumble recoveries and one sack.

Free agent safety Tyrann Mathieu is at least considering coming home again, visiting with his hometown New Orleans Saints on Tuesday.

NFL Network reported that no deal is imminent, characterizing it as more of a casual visit while the three-time All-Pro was in town to visit friends and family.

It is noteworthy, however, as this is believed to be Mathieu’s first team visit this offseason.

Chiefs’ Tyrann Mathieu to play vs. Bengals

Kansas City Chiefs star safety Tyrann Mathieu was removed from the injury report and will play in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game against the visiting Cincinnati Bengals.

Mathieu was listed as questionable on Friday, five days after sustaining a concussion in the team’s divisional-round victory over the Buffalo Bills.

Mathieu was a full practice participant on Thursday and Friday.

Mathieu, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, had 76 tackles, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries in 16 of the team’s 17 regular-season games this season.

The Chiefs also listed running back Darrel Williams (toe) as questionable on Friday. Williams missed the Buffalo game after being hurt the previous week in the wild-card round against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Williams was a limited practice participant on Friday.

Williams rushed for 558 yards and six touchdowns and caught 47 passes for 452 yards and two scores in 17 regular-season games.

As for the Bengals, defensive tackle Josh Tupou (knee) was listed as questionable on Friday after missing both his team’s first two playoff games. He was a limited practice participant for the third straight day.

Receiver Stanley Morgan (hamstring) and defensive end Cam Sample (groin) are both doubtful for the contest. Both players missed practice on Friday.

Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu was back at practice on Thursday.

Although Mathieu remains in concussion protocol, the fact that the three-time Pro Bowl selection returned to practice can be construed as a positive.

“He was out there and did a nice job,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Thursday.

Mathieu was injured after teammate Jarran Reed’s knee inadvertently caught him in the head during Sunday’s AFC divisional-round clash against the Buffalo Bills.

Without Mathieu, the Chiefs were unable to contain Josh Allen and wide receiver Gabriel Davis, who connected for four touchdowns in the 42-36 overtime shootout.

If Mathieu isn’t cleared for the AFC Championship game against the visiting Cincinnati Bengals, he would be replaced by backup Daniel Sorensen. Sorensen, however, has one of the lowest ratings in the NFL at the position, according to Pro Football Focus.

Mathieu, 29, recorded 76 tackles, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries in 16 games (all starts) this season.

Safety Tyrann Mathieu was the only player to miss practice for the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday.

Mathieu exited the AFC divisional playoff win over the Buffalo Bills in the first quarter on Sunday and remains in concussion protocol.

Head coach Andy Reid said Mathieu could be back Thursday if “everything goes well.”

Chiefs S Tyrann Mathieu (concussion) ‘feels good’

Kansas City safety Tyrann Mathieu remains in the concussion protocol but felt good Monday morning, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said.

Mathieu suffered a head injury in the first quarter Sunday and was ruled out for the rest of the AFC divisional round victory over the visiting Buffalo Bills.

“He’s still in the protocol and going through it, but he feels good. We’ll see how that goes moving forward,” Reid said.

Mathieu was injured when he took an accidental knee to the head from teammate Jarran Reed. Mathieu played just seven snaps.

Daniel Sorensen took over for Mathieu and had nine tackles in the win over the Bills. He played 92 percent of the Chiefs’ defensive snaps.

Mathieu is a three-time Pro Bowler, including in 2021, and a three-time first-team All-Pro selection. He played in 16 games (all starts) in the regular season and grabbed three interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, along with three fumble recoveries and 76 tackles.

Kansas City also is releasing receiver Josh Gordon (five catches in 12 games) and hopes to sign him to the practice squad. Reid said the team is activating defensive tackle Khalen Saunders (knee) off injured reserve as his 21-day window expired.

The Chiefs are preparing to host the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday in the AFC Championship game.

Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu (concussion) won’t return vs. Bills

Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu suffered a head injury in the first quarter Sunday and was ruled out for the rest of the AFC divisional round game against the visiting Buffalo Bills.

Mathieu appeared to collide with the leg of a teammate attempting to make a tackle and was taken to the locker room to be examined by an independent physician. The Chiefs later announced he had entered concussion protocol.

Mathieu is a three-time Pro Bowler, including in 2021, and a three-time first-team All-Pro selection. He played in 16 games (all starts) in the regular season and grabbed three interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, along with three fumble recoveries and 76 tackles.

The Bills used two fourth-down conversions to score a touchdown on that first possession before the Chiefs responded with a TD drive for a 7-7 tie after one quarter.
