Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh on NCAA sanctions: No time for ‘Rumorville’

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh maintains the looming possibility of the NCAA vacating the No. 1-ranked Wolverines’ victories during the 2023 season is nowhere near the team’s radar before the College Football Playoff national championship on Monday night in Houston.

“We’re thinking about we’ve got one phase line to go here, that’s Monday night, it’s Washington,” Harbaugh said Wednesday as the Wolverines make final preparations for the No. 2 Huskies before traveling to Texas. “We’re going to do anything and everything in our power to get ready for that football game.”

Michigan used a carousel of assistant coaches in Harbaugh’s head-coaching role this season. The Wolverines have a program-record 14 wins entering the national title game but Harbaugh was on the sideline for only half of them. He was suspended twice — four games to begin the regular season and three games by the Big Ten following an investigation into sign-stealing allegations.

Harbaugh said his message this week will be two-fold: Washington is a great team, and Michigan responds to pressure situations. He pointed to instances of responding to adverse conditions or poor decisions in the Rose Bowl, such as quarterback J.J. McCarthy throwing an interception — overturned by replay because the defender was ruled out of bounds — on the first offensive play from scrimmage.

“J.J., the first play of the game, clearly throwing the ball away. And I can tell you having made a bad play in a football game, it’s like a train going through your head of you just almost see red,” Harbaugh said. “… There are a lot of guys that will hang their heads and go into the tank, or get that deer-in-the-headlights look. But every guy that had that happen in the game came back and made a phenomenal play.”

Michigan last won the national championship in 1997, albeit a split title with Nebraska, capped by a win over Washington State in the Rose Bowl. The Wolverines have never played in the national championship in the BCS or CFP era.

Harbaugh didn’t want to discuss sign-stealing or the possibility the NCAA could punish Michigan with sanctions — including erasing wins.

“Getting ready for this game. One-track mind. I guess you want to live in the world of Rumorville or speculation, but we just don’t really have any room to be doing that at this point. Our time is spent elsewhere,” Harbaugh said.

Harbaugh is also not planning to discuss his future as speculation around NFL interest continues to swirl.

“Just taking care of business today, very one-track mind, dominate the day,” Harbaugh said. “Wake up tomorrow and see if we can’t dominate that day.”

Lions to lead NFL in wins? $20 wager would fetch $30K

One proud bettor placed a $20 wager on the Detroit Lions to become king of the longshots this season.

A bettor with BetMGM took the Lions at +150000 odds to lead the NFL in wins in 2021.

If the Lions beat the odds and come through, the ticket would cash for $30,000.

BetMGM has taken more than 80 percent of total bets on team win totals on the Lions to exceed five victories in 17 regular-season games in 2021. As of Aug. 9, the Lions “over” on five wins was the most bet regular-season win total at BetMGM.

In head coach Dan Campbell’s first season with the Lions ahead, Detroit is attempting to snap a streak of three losing seasons in which the franchise posted a 14-33-1 record.

The Lions have only one season with as many as 12 wins (12-4 in 1991) since 1934.

Since the NFC Central became the NFC North in 2002, the Lions have finished fourth (last) nine times, including three consecutive seasons entering 2021.

NFL Week 7 Football Props: Patriots vs. Bears

NFL Week 7 Football Props: Patriots vs. Bears

It’s official: The Patriots are legitimate. Except for those living in New England, most people were silently hoping that this would be the year that the AFC reign of the Patriots would end. Following a 1-2 start, Patriots fans may have been a bit skeptical, but likely remembered that they’ve dropped at least one of the first four games over in 2017 and 2016. Since week 3, New England has put up 38+ points, and just last week took down the previously undefeated Kansas City Chiefs in a 43-40 shootout. New England is strong, and looking to continue their hot streak.

Now the Bears have certainly found their guy in Mitch Trubisky. He’s tossed his way to 11 touchdowns, only 4 interceptions, and a QBR of 105.6. He’s put together a solid 3-2 start for the Bears, who currently sit atop the NFC North, even though the Vikings and Packers are right behind them. Four of their five games have been decided by less than one score. In those games, they’re 2-2, and allowed both the Packers and Dolphins to stage 4th quarter comebacks that led to losses for the Bears. The rout over the Buccaneers gave Chicago faithful a great deal of hope, but Sunday’s matchup with New England will be a true test for them. They come in as 3 point underdogs, but their explosive offense could prove challenging for the Patriots. Plus Khalil Mack will likely make Tom Brady’s life a bit more difficult.

Alternate lines are available at Sugar House Sportsbook if you live in the state of New Jersey.

2017 Wins and Losses

Following a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on December 31st 2017, the Cleveland Browns completed their perfect 0-16 season. On the same day, the Baltimore faithful watched in anguish as the Ravens gave up a last-minute touchdown to the Bengals, essentially handing their wild card spot to the Buffalo Bills.

After starting the season with 4 consecutive losses, the Los Angeles Chargers finished the season with 9 wins (and almost nabbed themselves an AFC wild card spot). The 49ers started the season in a similar fashion, but finished on a 5-game winning streak, defeating three playoff teams.

You may not be a fan of any of the aforementioned teams, but the information probably sounded a bit familiar. That’s because wins and losses tend to be the only stats that anyone remembers. The graphic below reveals the wins and losses for each team in 2017, ranked from greatest to least. It also allows you to filter based on divisional and conference games.

Comparing Team vs Divisional Wins

It’s no secret that the New England Patriots have pretty much owned the AFC East for the past decade. However, did you know that the rest of the AFC East have averaged fewer than 8 wins in the same time frame? If the goal is to make the playoffs, it certainly helps when the rest of your division tends to produce losing records. The flip side of the AFC East is the AFC North. The Bengals, Steelers, and Ravens have had many strong seasons, often sending two of the three teams to the playoffs (in 2011, all three teams advanced to the playoffs).
The graphic below allows you to choose a division and a team, and it displays the wins for the selected team vs. the average wins for the rest of the division.
