Cowboys activate All-Pro T Tyron Smith

The Dallas Cowboys moved eight-time Pro Bowl tackle Tyron Smith to the active roster on Saturday, making him available for the team’s game with the Jaguars in Jacksonville Sunday.

Smith, 32, had missed every game this season after sustaining an avulsion fracture of his left knee (a hamstring tendon injury) that required surgery in August. He was designated to return from injured reserve on Dec. 7.

Primarily a left tackle throughout his career, the two-time All-Pro could slide to the other side on Sunday, as right tackle Terence Steele was recently shelved with an ACL injury.

Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones acknowledged as much on a local radio station (105.3, The Fan) this week, saying Smith, who played right tackle as a rookie in 2011, has the ability to do so again.

“Absolutely he does. Yes, sir. It’s like riding a bicycle,” Jones said.

Smith has started all 144 games he has played in since joining Dallas as the No. 9 overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft.

He missed just one game during his first five seasons in the league, then an average of three games a year over his next four seasons. Neck surgery caused him to miss all but two games in 2020 and then a variety of ailments (COVID, ankle) limited him to 11 games in 2021.

Cowboys LT Tyron Smith designated to return from IR

Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith was designated to return from injured reserve on Wednesday.

The move begins a 21-day window to practice for Smith, who sustained an avulsion fracture of his left knee — the hamstring tendon behind the knee separated from the bone — in August and required surgery.

Smith, 31, is a two-time All-Pro and eight-time Pro Bowl selection.

He has started all 144 games that he has played since being selected by Dallas with the ninth overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft. Neck surgery cost Smith all but two games in 2020, and ankle injuries and time on the COVID list limited him to 11 games last year.

Cowboys CB Anthony Brown out for rest of season

Dallas Cowboys starting cornerback Anthony Brown ruptured his Achilles in Sunday’s game and is out for the rest of the season.

Brown, 28, was injured in the third quarter of the Cowboys’ 54-19 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night. The seven-year veteran had three tackles and one pass defensed before exiting.

On the good news front, eight-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Tyron Smith will return to practice this week.

Brown, who started all 12 games for Dallas this season, had 42 tackles and seven passes defensed. He has nine career interceptions in 94 games (69 starts), all for the Cowboys.

“I’m sick for him,” owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Sunday after the game. “He’s had an outstanding career. Boy, he’s brought it up by the boot strap, and he, to me, is what a young player working hard, really having the right stuff, can become who’s not a No. 1 draft pick. I’m sick for him and sick for us.”

The Cowboys selected Brown in the sixth round of the 2016 draft.

Smith suffered an avulsion fracture of his left knee — the hamstring tendon behind the knee separated from the bone — in August and required surgery. The team originally hoped to have him back by Thanksgiving.

Smith, 31, is a two-time All-Pro. In 11 seasons with the Cowboys, he has started all 144 games he has played. Neck surgery cost him all but two games in 2020, and ankle injuries and time on the COVID list limited him to 11 games last year.

Reports: Cowboys LT Tyron Smith out months with knee injury

Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith needs surgery to repair an avulsion fracture in his left knee and could miss 12 weeks, NFL Network reported.

Smith, 31, left Wednesday’s practice with what was thought to be a severe hamstring injury. Testing revealed the hamstring tendon behind the knee separated from the bone, creating the fracture, per reports.

Smith, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection, did not damage his ACL.

The injury occurred during an 11-on-11 drill, when Smith buckled while attempting to make a block on linebacker Leighton Vander Esch, according to multiple reports. Smith walked off the field, and he later walked out of the locker room without a limp and with no knee brace or sleeve, the Cowboys’ website reported.

Left guard Connor McGovern said, according to the Dallas Morning News,”I was in pass protect, and all the sudden, I see him on the ground. I didn’t even care … where the ball was downfield. I instantly just went to him.

“You saw literally everyone on the offense, even defensive guys, running over there. When a guy like that goes down — it doesn’t even matter who it is, this team is so close. Everyone is trying to get over there and see if they’re all right and get them back up.”

McGovern added that he later interacted with Smith in the locker room.

“He gave me a nice, reassuring grunt like he usually does,” McGovern said, according to the Morning News. “That’s one thing, playing next to him for so long, I can decipher his grunts. ‘I think he’s all right.’”

Cowboys LT Tyron Smith exits practice with injury

The Dallas Cowboys are awaiting word on the severity of the injury sustained by left tackle Tyron Smith in practice on Wednesday.

Initial reports indicated that Smith, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection, hurt his left knee and he would undergo an MRI exam on Thursday. However, ESPN reported late Wednesday night that Smith sustained a serious left hamstring injury that could keep him sidelined for several months.

Smith’s anterior cruciate ligament was intact based on early tests, per ESPN.

The injury occurred during an 11-on-11 drill, when Smith buckled while blocking linebacker Leighton Vander Esch, according to multiple reports. Smith walked off the field, and he later walked out of the locker room without a limp and with no knee brace or sleeve, the Cowboys’ website reported.

Left guard Connor McGovern said, according to the Dallas Morning News “I was in pass protect, and all the sudden, I see him on the ground. I didn’t even care … where the ball was downfield. I instantly just went to him.

Cowboys’ Micah Parsons, Tyron Smith off COVID list

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons and left tackle Tyron Smith have been removed from the reserve/COVID-19 list ahead of the team’s wild-card game against the visiting San Francisco 49ers.

Both players are expected to resume their starting roles after sitting out the Cowboys’ 51-26 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles last Saturday.

Starting safety Jayron Kearse remains in COVID-19 protocol, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said.

Parsons, 22, recorded 13 sacks since being selected by Dallas with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He has started 16 games for the NFC East champion Cowboys and has 84 tackles, 30 quarterback hits and three forced fumbles.

Smith, 31, has started all 11 games in which he has appeared this season and all 144 over his 11-year career with the Cowboys. He is an eight-time Pro Bowl selection.

The Cowboys host the 49ers on Sunday.

Cowboys’ Tyron Smith, Anthony Brown test positive for virus

Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith and cornerback Anthony Brown tested positive for COVID-19, coach Mike McCarthy announced Thursday.

The two players join rookie linebacker Micah Parsons in dealing with the virus. Parsons was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday by the Cowboys (11-5), with McCarthy declaring him out for Sunday’s road game against the Eagles (9-7).

McCarthy also said Thursday the team has “a number of guys that are sick” but have not tested positive for COVID-19.

Smith, 31, has started all 11 games in which he has appeared this season and all 144 over his 11-year career with the Cowboys. The eight-time Pro Bowl selection likely will be replaced at left tackle by Terence Steele, who has played in 15 games (12 starts) this season.

Brown, 28, has 71 tackles, three interceptions and one forced fumble in 16 games (all starts) this season. His spot could be manned by Kelvin Joseph, who started recently in place of Jourdan Lewis during the latter’s time on the COVID-19 list.

Dallas WR CeeDee Lamb (concussion) iffy to play Thursday

The Dallas Cowboys expect All-Pro offensive tackle Tyron Smith to return on Thanksgiving but the status of star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is up in the air.

Lamb is in the concussion protocol after leaving Sunday’s game in Kansas City with a head injury. NFL Network reported it’s unlikely Lamb can clear protocol by Thursday, but Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones was more optimistic.

“He’ll start his protocol right away,” Jones told Dallas station 105.3 The Fan on Monday. “Then, he’s doing really well. So, he’ll have an opportunity to play. If he were having issues today, then you’d probably be a little leery, but the fact that so far he’s doing well. But he’ll have to go through testing. So, we won’t really know that until Thursday.”

Lamb was injured late in the first half of the Cowboys’ 19-9 loss to the Chiefs on a jump ball in the end zone. Lamb had three catches for 14 yards. The 2020 first-round pick has 50 catches for 740 yards and six touchdowns on the season.

The Cowboys are already without perennial Pro Bowl WR Amari Cooper, who landed on the reserve/COVID-19 list last Friday. The unvaccinated Cooper tested positive and has to quarantine a mandatory 10 days.

“That’s my teammate, that’s my brother, we’re going to support him. That’s his decision,” quarterback Dak Prescott said of Cooper after Sunday’s loss. “Unfortunate we’re not having him, but I know he’ll come back and be beneficial for us in the late part of the season.”

Smith has missed the past three games with an ankle injury. The seven-time Pro Bowl selection has started all 140 games played during his 11 NFL seasons.

The Cowboys (7-3) host the Las Vegas Raiders (5-5) on Thursday in Arlington, Texas.

Cowboys star LT Tyron Smith (ankle) to sit vs. Falcons

Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith will miss Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons due to his injured ankle.

It marks the second straight game in which Smith will be sidelined. He didn’t practice at all this week.

Smith, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, has started all 140 games played during his 11 NFL seasons.

Defensive end Randy Gregory (calf) was ruled out earlier this week when he was placed on injured reserve. Receiver Cedrick Wilson (shoulder) and third-string quarterback Will Grier (knee) are listed as questionable.

Atlanta cornerback Kendall Sheffield (hamstring) was ruled out Friday. Defensive lineman Jonathan Bullard (concussion), linebacker Steven Means (knee) and tight end Lee Smith (back) were listed as doubtful, and defensive lineman John Cominsky (shoulder) is questionable.

Cowboys tackles Tyron Smith, La’el Collins both ‘full go’

Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said starting tackles Tyron Smith and La’el Collins will be “full go” for training camp after injuries nearly wiped out their 2020 seasons.

“They both look in great shape. They both have been here the whole time through phases one, two and three,” McCarthy said after watching the linemen work out on Tuesday. “They’re where they need to be.”

Smith played only two games last fall before undergoing season-ending surgery for a neck injury. Collins missed the entire season following hip surgery.

“There’s a level of caution also with them here this week and the next two weeks,” McCarthy said. “We’ll see them in the full-go manner come training camp. But they both look great.”

Smith, 30, was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft and is a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, two-time All-Pro and a member of the Hall of Fame’s All-Decade Team for the 2010s.

Smith has started all 133 of his games with the Cowboys.

Collins, 27, was undrafted out of LSU in 2015. He started 61 of his 62 games with Dallas from 2015-19.

Without them, the Cowboys went 6-10 last season and their constantly rotating offensive line surrendered 44 sacks.
