Texans interview Brian Flores for coaching job

One day after announcing the firing of head coach David Culley, the Houston Texans interviewed former Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores for the same position Friday.

Field Level Media’s Aaron Wilson reported Thursday that Flores was Houston’s top target for the vacancy. Flores and Texans general manager Nick Caserio have a shared history from their time with the New England Patriots.

Flores, 40, was fired after three seasons in Miami in which the Dolphins managed two winning seasons but failed to make the playoffs. Flores amassed a 24-25 record in that span.

Flores also interviewed Friday for the Chicago Bears’ open head-coaching job.

Culley, 66, guided the Texans to a 4-13 record in his lone season on the job. He did so without having access to quarterback Deshaun Watson, who demanded a trade before sitting out the season in the wake of 22 civil lawsuits alleging sexual assault and misconduct.

Flores is the first known candidate to interview in Houston. The news came on the same day that Caserio told reporters that firing Culley was “one of the hardest decisions I’ve made in my life.”

Houston also fired offensive coordinator Tim Kelly on Thursday.

Reports: Texans fire head coach David Culley

The Houston Texans fired first-year head coach David Culley, multiple media outlets reported on Thursday.

The Texans have yet to publicly announce any news on Culley, who guided the club to a 4-13 record this season.

Fox Sports reported Sunday that Culley would likely be fired with general manager Nick Caserio targeting former New England ally Josh McDaniels as head coach. McDaniels and Caserio were former teammates at John Carroll University.

Between the 2020 shift away from a general manager, trading All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and firing coach Bill O’Brien, the Texans have been widely criticized for what appears to be less-than optimal team management. Players were supportive of Culley on Monday before parting for the offseason but also voiced displeasure with the process that brought Culley and Caserio to Houston.

Culley, 66, took the job in Houston in January 2021 after quarterback Deshaun Watson requested the franchise trade him.

Watson reportedly felt disrespected by ownership when his choice for head coach, Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, wasn’t seriously considered.

Prior to joining the Texans, Culley was an NFL assistant coach for 27 years following 15 years in the college ranks.

David Culley hasn’t heard about future as Texans’ coach

The Houston Texans nearly pulled off a 21-point comeback against AFC No. 1 seed Tennessee in Sunday’s season finale, but the Titans held on to win, 28-25.

That result dropped Houston to 4-13 to conclude David Culley’s first year as coach, and it’s not completely certain whether he will get a second.

Culley was not among the heads to roll on so-called “Black Monday” in the NFL, when the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins became the latest teams to cut ties with their head coaches. That does not mean Culley is assured of a return to the gig in Houston, and he did not say Monday that he’d been given any word from above about his future.

“As far as I know, I’m the head coach of the Texans right now, and am moving forward with that,” Culley said.

Asked if he’d spoken with general manager Nick Caserio or CEO Cal McNair about his status, Culley added, “Not at all, and I will not speak to them, they’ll speak to me.”

Culley took the job in Houston in January 2021 after quarterback Deshaun Watson reportedly had requested the franchise trade him. Watson did not soften that stance after meeting with the coach, and after numerous sexual assault and misconduct lawsuits were filed against Watson in civil court, Culley had the unenviable task of leading the Texans without their Pro Bowl quarterback playing a snap all season.

Culley, 66, received vocal support from some of his players who spoke to the media on exit interview day.

“I thought Coach Culley did a great job his first year as a head coach,” offensive lineman Justin Britt said. “Kind of the situation we had here in Houston wouldn’t have been easy for anybody. I feel like his leadership was consistent and who he was was consistent, and that’s what we needed here as a leader, someone to run this team. I hope he gets another shot.”

Running back Rex Burkhead said it was “definitely a joy” to play for Culley.

“He’s an unbelievable coach. He’s a great leader of this team,” Burkhead said. “People may not see the growth in the win category, but from a player’s perspective seeing it out on the practice field, seeing the guys in the locker room, especially some young guys, taking some steps further has been super impressive.”

Culley came to Houston last year after serving as the Baltimore Ravens’ assistant head coach and wide receivers coach.

The Jacksonville Jaguars (fired Urban Meyer), Las Vegas Raiders (Jon Gruden) and Denver Broncos (Vic Fangio) will also be searching for a new coach this offseason.

Texans expect Tyrod Taylor to start vs. Dolphins

Houston quarterback Tyrod Taylor hasn’t had any setbacks in his recovery from a hamstring injury and is expected to start Sunday when the Texans visit the Miami Dolphins, coach David Culley said.

Taylor sustained a strained hamstring in Week 2, a 31-21 loss to the Cleveland Browns, and has been sidelined since. He was designated to return from injured reserve on Oct. 27, opening his window to practice.

In his absence, rookie quarterback Davis Mills directed the offense to an 0-6 record. The Texans are 1-7, as are the Dolphins.

“We will use the best guys that give us the best chance to win, and Tyrod Taylor gives us the best chance to win,” Culley said Thursday. “He was our starting quarterback for a reason.”

Before the injury, Taylor had completed 70.5 percent (31 of 44) of his passes for 416 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Taylor, 32, is in his 11th season. He has a 4-2 career record against Miami.

Report: Deshaun Watson tells new coach he wants out of Houston

Disgruntled Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson met with new head coach David Culley late last week and told him he has no intention of playing for the team again, ESPN reported Thursday.

It’s the latest nugget in the staredown between Watson and the Texans that began more than a month ago.

Watson’s unhappiness with the team began with the process around the hiring of general manager Nick Caserio. He reportedly was unhappy with the Texans after the team did not consult with him before hiring Caserio.

Watson’s issue reportedly wasn’t with Caserio, but rather that owner Cal McNair didn’t vet any of Watson’s recommendations to be interviewed for the position before he learned about Caserio’s hiring on social media.

The hiring of Culley, who is Black, did nothing to change Watson’s outlook, a sentiment he reportedly shared directly with Culley last Friday when they met.

However, the team has been steadfast that it will not trade Watson.

Watson posted a cryptic tweet on Thursday, saying “loyalty is everything. Don’t you EVER forget it.”

Watson has thrown for 14,539 yards and 104 touchdowns in four seasons since the Texans selected him with the 12th overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft. He has also rushed for 1,677 yards and 17 scores.
